In 2020 I completed my bachelor’s degree in biology, from the Faculty of Science, University of Lisbon. From there I entered my master’s in marine biology, in 2020, from the University of Algarve. During my master’s I did an internship in the Marine Laboratory of Guia. I helped in a study working with the toxic microalgae Gymnodium catenatum. The project aimed to understand which were the impacts of ocean acidification on the algae. While in my master's, I also found myself involved in the Stop Shark Finning European Volunteering Initiative in 2021, which aims to ban the commercialization of shark fins in Europe. The following year, 2022, I was in the Azores, on Faial island, where I did my master's dissertation, at the Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Azores. The study was part of the PESCAz project (MAR–01.03.02–FEAMP–0039). The aim of the work centered on making a holistic analysis of the bottom longline fishery in the Azores, by evaluating its ecological, economic, and social components. In this way, it was possible to identify some of the shortcomings of this fishery, which is so important for the archipelago, and possible solutions to remedy them. Through this work, I came into contact with the reality of the Azorean fishery, realized the lack of biological information, and socio-economic information about the fishing community, and the barriers that often exist between the scientific and fishing communities. I was able to publish the resulting paper from my thesis “Multidimensional Indicators to Assess the Sustainability of Demersal Small-Scale Fishery in the Azores” in 2022. While I was completing my master's thesis, I worked as a tutor in a tutoring center (part-time), improving my social and time management skills. I finished my master's thesis in 2023, with a classification of 20. In the same year, 2023, I interned at the Municipal Sea Strategy Unit at Cascais City Council (UEMM, CMC). Its main objective was to prepare applications for EU funds for projects related to marine conservation and the economy of the sea. This internship gave me a very different experience from what I was used to, outside the research world. It was an asset and allowed me to open my horizons to new opportunities that may arise. During my time here I also prepared an application for the Green Awards (Prémios Verdes Visão + ADP), for the “Florestas Marinhas de Cascais” project, which won an honorable mention. In 2024, January, I started an internship under the Erasmus+ program (postgraduates) at the Marine and Freshwater Research Centre at Atlantic Technological University in Galway, Ireland. My work consisted of preparing and analyzing Atlantic salmon scales in order to build an archive with data from several years (since the 1970s) that can be used and studied in the future ("Unlocking the Archive" project).
