Andreia de Sousa Fernandes

Andreia S. Fernandes obtained a PhD in Biochemistry in 2004 by the University Nova Lisboa at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica. She was a researcher at ITQB-NOVA and IBMC, integrated into i3S in 2015, and a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics in Frankfurt and at the Zurich University. She researched bacterial respiratory chains, fungal cell biology, and bacterial potassium transporters. Currently, she is working on the oral astringency perception with Susana Soares at LAQV-REQUIMTE and the University of Porto, integrated in the ERC grant project on "New molecular and cell-based approaches to assess food astringency and bitterness". A Fernandes participated in 6 funded research projects, 1 of them as the PI, and was co-PI of 1 funded project in science sustainability. She published 18 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including 9 as the first author, with over 500 citations and h-index of 13. She also published 1 book chapter and 10 communications in proceedings of international conferences and gave 5 oral presentations at international conferences. She was a committee member of 3 international conferences and 3 scientific courses, and hosted 2 scientific seminars and 2 webinars on science sustainability. She lectured at 4 higher education institutions, supervised 3 BSc students, and evaluated 2 PhD and 1 BSc theses. She was the Secretary of the Portuguese Biophysics Society for 5 years and co-chaired the i3S GreenLab Initiative for 1.5 year.
