Gilda Maria Rodrigues Lopes

Since earning her BSc degree in Biology, Geology, and Science Education from the University of Porto (2001–2006), Gilda Lopes has been committed to an academic career. After graduating, she was qualified to teach middle and high school students in Life and Earth Sciences, working as a teacher for two years. However, her growing interest in scientific research led her to pursue an MSc in Geology and Education at the same university (2006–2008). During this period, she developed strong scientific and pedagogical skills, along with a broad range of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary competencies that enhanced her profile as a researcher. Her passion for geology deepened during her MSc, motivating her to apply for a fully funded PhD in Geology, focusing on fossilized spores and microplankton. The project was supervised by Prof. Paulo Fernandes at the University of Algarve, in collaboration with the Portuguese Geological Survey (LNEG) and Trinity College Dublin. The research aimed to improve the understanding of biostratigraphy, paleoclimates, and paleogeography of Paleozoic Portugal. Through this work, she gained extensive experience in laboratory and analytical techniques related to stratigraphy, palynology, thermal maturation, and geochemistry. In 2012, the significance and quality of her research were recognized with the Best Student Poster Award at the 45th Annual Meeting of The Palynological Society (AASP) in Kentucky, USA. Gilda completed her PhD in December 2013 with Summa cum laude. In May 2014, she moved to Norway to begin a postdoctoral project as a biostratigrapher specializing in palynology at the University of Bergen. This project, fully funded by the university and an industry consortium, focused on the Early Carboniferous palynostratigraphy of the Barents Sea. The aim was to establish a palynological biozonal framework to enhance stratigraphic correlation within the basin and with surrounding areas. During this time, she was awarded three travel grants from the University of Bergen in collaboration with Equinor and the Meltzer Foundation. From March 2019 to December 2021, she worked as a researcher at the University of Algarve on a project reconstructing the palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimate of the Permian Mozambican Karoo successions. Until October 2024, she held a postdoctoral position at the University of Sheffield, working within Professor Charles Wellman's research group. Over the past five years, Gilda has also built a solid teaching and supervision record. She lectured on the MSc course Introduction to Paleozoic and Mesozoic Palynology – with a focus on pollen and spores at the University of Bergen, and taught Palaeoceanography and Global Changes as well as Stratigraphy and Paleobiology at the University of Algarve. She co-supervised a Master’s thesis on palynofacies methodologies at the University of Bergen and two other MSc projects at the University of Algarve and the Agostinho Neto University (Angola). Gilda has actively contributed to science communication and academic development by co-organizing several international conferences, seminars, and workshops, and by participating in numerous public outreach activities. She has served as a reviewer for several scientific journals and was editor of The Palynological Society Newsletter (ISSN: 0732-6041). She currently serves as Secretary of the Commission Internationale de Microflore du Paleozoique and is a member of the editorial board of the ISI journal Palynology (Taylor & Francis). In addition, she contributes to several scientific committees, including the CIMA Scientific Commission and the National Scientific Support Group for Horizon Europe discussions.
