Newton Gomes concluded his Ph.D. in Microbiology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 1999. He has extensive expertise in environmental and applied microbiology and on the use of microbes (including symbionts) in biotechnology. Newton Gomes professional experience includes 6 years (1999, 2001-2006) as Post-Doc researcher at the Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI) (Braunschweig, Germany) and more than 12 years as researcher at Department of Biology and the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) (University of Aveiro, Portugal). Currently, he is principal researcher and coordinator of the Laboratory for Molecular Studies of Marine Environments (LEMAM) at CESAM. In his curriculum the most frequent terms in the context of scientific, technological and artistic-cultural output are: marine microbiology; aquaculture; microbial ecology; metagenomics; microbiome; biotechnology and bioremediation.
