Alice S. Pereira (ASP) graduated in Applied Chemistry-Biotechnology at the FCT NOVA, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa and obtained her PhD degree in Chemistry/Inorganic Chemistry in 1995. After her post-doctoral studies (5 years) at the University of South Florida (Tampa, USA), Emory University (Atlanta, USA), and the CQFB-REQUIMTE/FCT NOVA, in the areas of Molecular Biology, Molecular Biophysics, and Physical Biochemistry, in 2000 she became an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Division of Biochemistry and Biophysics, at FCT NOVA. Currently, and since December 2020, she is an Associate Professor in the same department. She is a co-leader of the Molecular Biophysics group at UCIBIO-i4HB research unit (together with Prof. Pedro Tavares). The major focus of her investigation is the study: 1) of catalytic mechanisms (iron oxidation/storage and release) and identification/description of reaction intermediates and products of enzymes of the Ferritin family and ROS detoxification, with focus on the mini-ferritins; 2) biomolecular assembly formation and dynamics of proteins; 3) the factors influencing the stability and dynamic behavior of proteins, and how these properties affect their biological functions; 3) the intricate interactions between proteins and other biomolecules, as DNA, or ligands like metal ions, which are essential for diverse cellular processes and often determine biomolecular function. For such studies, ASP employs a multidisciplinary approach, applying biophysical (EPR, Mössbauer, CD/SRCD, UV-Visible spectroscopies, DLS, AFM, SAXS) combined with biochemical, and mutagenesis methods. She recently became interested in polymeric supramolecular structures made of metalloproteins and enzymes. Her research focuses on protein nanocages, primarily from the Ferritin and encapsulin families, with potential applications in biotechnology, biomedicine, and material science. Between Nov. 2019 and Jun. 2023, ASP was the coordinator of the Division of Biochemistry and Biophysics. She is a member of the departmental Council at the Department of Chemistry (since Nov. 2019), member of the pedagogical committee of the Biochemistry for Health master program, and member of the scientific committee of the Biochemistry master program. Together with Prof Pedro Tavares (Department of Chemistry) and Prof. Paulo Limão-Vieira (Department of Physics), ASP founded the international doctoral program in Radiation Biology and Biophysics-RaBBiT and is now a member of its Directive and Scientific committees. ASP has advised over 70 students and young researchers during her career, 3 post-doctoral researchers, 13 PhD students (4 ongoing), 13 MSc students and more than 30 undergraduate students.
