I graduated in Biochemistry and Food Chemistry at the University of Aveiro (UA) in 2007, after a 9-month internship at the National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge (INSA). The following year, I obtained a Master's Degree in Analytical Chemistry and Quality Control (UA), followed by a PhD in Chemistry (UA/Univ. Strathclyde, 2013), before proceeding with my career as a Research Fellow at project RemAS-UA. In 2016, I moved to the National Institute of Health to work on the international project NeoGene. Since 2017, I have been a post-doc at EPIUnit/ISPUP, and ITR. Since then, my main research interests and activities have focused on understanding the biological effects of human exposure to chemical mixtures, including emergent (e.g. nanomaterials) and legacy (e.g. metals) contaminants, using in vitro and in vivo models, and the development of novel approaches to predict these contaminants toxicity to the population. In 2017 I started a research line focusing on studying the impact of human exposure to chemical mixtures, so far securing 500k in competitive funding as Principal Investigator of 2 projects: NanoLegaTox (PTDC/SAU-PUB/29651/2017) and MixIngTox (2022.03491.PTDC). These projects are ensured by a team of 15 researchers across 6 institutions (Portugal and Spain). I have participated in 13 projects (10 ntl; 3 intl), which allowed me to acquire a multidisciplinary array of skills in several areas, including experimental planning, biological and inorganic sample analysis, characterization of NPs, quantification of chemicals, in vitro experimentation, toxicity endpoints, and method development. So far, my work resulted in 2 thesis and 29 peer-reviewed papers. I'm the senior or 1st author in 45% of the papers, with two first-author publications in TrAC (IF 12.296), which testifies to my experience as an independent researcher, and I have an h-index of 14 (Scopus). I have published with 69 co-authors from 22 countries. I have presented my work to the scientific community, with 46 communications in national and international conferences (24 oral; 2 invited), and awarded 4 times in an international context. I was a member of the organizing committee of several scientific events, including 5 international conferences (11th ICMGP, 4th ICOETOX, 48th EEMGS, ISBM-12 and DiMoPEx Training School on Risk Assessment and Communication), and was part of the Scientific Committee for 48th EEMGS (2020) and ISBM-12 (2023). I was also responsible for the organization of international interlaboratory exercise ILAE-Hg-2 (38 participants from 6 countries). I have supervised 1 Junior Researcher (post-doc level), 3 MsC and 3 undergraduate students. I am involved in advanced teaching, as an invited lecturer for the Specialization Course in Public Health (ISPUP) and at the School of Health of the Polytechnic of Porto. I was invited as an external expert/evaluator by COST Action, have been the main arguer of 7 MSc thesis and 2 intl PhD, and was invited as Guest-Editor for the Special Issue Toxicity of nanomaterials and legacy contaminants: risks to environment and human health of the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. I act regularly as reviewer for >15 SCI journals in the areas of Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Health, Toxicology, Nanotoxicity and Nanosafety. I have established national network of collaboration with researchers from CESAM-UA; INSA; CIIMAR-UP; CICECO-UA; LEPABE-UP; LAQV-REQUIMTE, and international with researchers from CICA-University of A Coruña (ES), University of Strathclyde (GB), CIEMAT (ES) , Swedish Uni. of Agriculture Sciences, and Umea University (SE); all resulted in peer-reviewed publications. In 2021, I was invited to join the Research Group NanoToxGen (Grupo de Investigación en Nanotoxicología y Toxicología Genética; ES).
