Vânia André (assistant researcher and invited assistant professor) has a 5-year degree in Chemical Engineering, a pre-Bologna MsC in Chemical Engineering-Applied Chemistry, and a European PhD in Chemistry, all from Instituto Superior Técnico/UTL. After being a researcher under DL57/2016 legislation (2018-2020), she is currently an assistant researcher at CQE, under a CEECIND contract. In 2004, Vânia worked in Manchester for a 6-month training as a chemical research assistant in industry, returning to Portugal for her McS degree (pre-Bologna). Since 2006, she is focused on applying Crystal Engineering and Supramolecular Chemistry towards improved crystal forms of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Currently, she is developing antibiotic coordination frameworks for enhanced properties and antibacterial activity. But she remains interest in developing other crystal forms, such as polymorphs, cocrystals, salts and BioMOFs, to improve the properties of commercially available drugs. She is involved in the design, synthesis and characterization of the novel compounds and always keeps in mind their application in the pharmaceutical industry. Vânia has a high level of expertise in Crystallography. Since 2004, Vânia has been involved in teaching experiences. Besides teaching at DQE-IST, Vânia is involved in lessons at several workshops, including the National Training Site Modern Methods of Structure Elucidation. She participates in the training of the users of the X-ray diffraction facilities at Instituto Superior Técnico. She (co-)supervises/d 2 post-doctoral research fellows, 2 PhD, 6 MsC, 1 BsC students, and several projects for curricular units and trainings of PhD and MsC students. She has served as jury of several academic examinations. She integrates/d the team of over 20 projects, including as principal researcher of a project co-funded by FCT and FEDER (Portugal 2020, Lisboa 2020). She was national representative and core group member of COST Action CA18112 and she is working group co-leader at the European IMPACTIVE project. Vânia is in the organizing committee of National Training Site Modern Methods of Structure Elucidation (CQE, 2009- ) and she has actively participated in the organization of another 12 national and international scientific events. She was the Portuguese Representative in the General Interest Group for Young Crystallographers of European Crystallographic Association (2011-2016). She is peer reviewer for ACS, RSC, Elsevier, IUCrJ and MDPI journals. The impact of her research is further witnessed by the outstanding scientists with whom she collaborates/d, namely, but not limited to, Nair Rodríguez-Hornedo, Dario Braga, Tomislav Friscic (Michigan, Bologna and McGill universities respectively), all well-known experts with whom she had the privilege to directly work with through visiting positions and with whom she still maintains contact. She also collaborated with ICMAB (Spain) and Wageningen University (Netherlands), and, at a national level, she collaborates with research groups of different academic institutions. Her experience as a researcher is best avowed by her remarkable publication list (h-index 27, >2068 citations @ Scopus). She published >100 papers in international journals. Also noteworthy are 2 patents, 6 book chapters, 14 papers in conference proceedings, 4 national papers, >40 oral communications and >100 poster presentations. She has been invited as discussion leader and for oral communications in national and international events. Vânia André was awarded with 3 video/poster prizes in international conferences and the Prize for the best internship for admission to the Portuguese Engineers Association. After a career break in 2022, due to maternity, Vânia is now a mother back in science, pursuing her goals with renewed energy and striving for excellence in research.
