L Carvalhais graduated in Language Teaching at U Aveiro (2005) and completed her PhD in Education at the same university in March 2010, with the development of tests to assess dyslexia in Portuguese children. This work was supported by an FCT grant. She was then awarded an FCT Post-Doctoral Grant in Psychology (2010-2014) at the U Porto, with the supervision of Prof SL Castro, to study spelling abilities among primary school children. 2 studies were conducted, and the tests to assess spelling abilities are now used by other research teams (Speech Lab Repository). L Carvalhais also collaborated on 2 FCT-funded projects. One project (PI: R Alves, U Porto), related to spelling and handwriting intervention programs, was linked with the Post-doc research plan and the tests developed by L Carvalhais were used on this project. Her expertise in testing reading and writing abilities among children was also relevant for participating (25%) in the other FCT-funded project (PI: A Allen Gomes, U Aveiro) that studied the effect of diurnal type and time of day on children with reading difficulties. Both studies were presented and discussed in scientific meetings, and papers/chapter books were published. L Carvalhais also participated in an LLP Grundtvig, supported by the European Commission and the Portuguese National Agency, to establish an international partnership with 8 countries concerning teaching and adult learning on specific learning disabilities (SpLD). One final report was presented at the European Parliament. L Carvalhais also received funding for short internships (e.g. COST ACTION grant; FCT grant application for training). During her Post-doctoral grant, L Carvalhais, with Prof SL Castro, established a partnership between U Porto and U Jyvaskyla to develop a Portuguese version of Graphogame Fluent and Graphogame Math. L Carvalhais has supervised several Master¿s students and co-supervised 1 FCT-funded PhD student. She was also an invited professor (30%) at the University of Aveiro and University Lusíada in the field of language and special education. From 2014 to 2017, L Carvalhais held the position of Post-doctoral researcher (Research Associate) in Psychology at the University of Luxembourg and was selected to coordinate a project funded by the Fonds National de la Recherche Luxembourg. This project benefited from the collaboration with internationally renowned experts in the field, including Prof Margaret Snowling (St John´s College, Oxford) and Prof Charles Hulme (U Oxford). Coordinating an international project brings to L Carvalhais a large sense of autonomy. Since September 2018, L Carvalhais has been a Professor at U Portucalense, Oporto, and since 2022, also collaborated as an Invited Adjunct Professor at Escola Superior de Educação de Santarém, Instituto Politécnico de Santarém. Her research interest actually focuses on training educators who are working in disability or other vulnerable contexts.
