Fernando Jorge Mendes Monteiro obtained his PhD in Metallurgical Engineering in 1986 by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto(FEUP). He is a full professor at FEUP, Head of the Doctoral program in Biomedical Engineering, and co-director of the BSc and MSc in Bioengineering at FEUP. He is the scientific coordinator of “biocomposites” group at I3s (Institute for Research and innovation in Health of University of Porto). Between 2010 and 2015 he presided at INEB(Institute for Biomedical Engineering). He published 173 scientific manuscripts in scientific peer-reviewed journals (h Index (Scopus)- 37 , h Index (Google scholar) - 44 Citations >6390). He is the editor of one book and author or co-author of 16 book chapters, ans submitted 8 patent applications. He was involved in over 240 scientific communications in international and national conferences and congresses. His scientific activities have been focused in developing biomaterials such as biocomposites based on natural polymers and nanophased ceramics for drug releasing, tissue regeneration, or with antimicrobial properties, as well as chemical and topographic surface modifications of bioceramics for tissue guided regeneration. On the other hand he has been studying nanomaterials interactions between nanophased systems and proteins, peptides and other macromolecules as biomarkers for cell targeting and bioimaging, with possible applications as theranotics in the treatment and identification of cancer cells, as well as microfluidics devices for liquid biopsy.
