Fábio Daniel da Silva Castro is a researcher at GECAD – Research Group on Intelligent Engineering and Computing for Advanced Innovation and Development, Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), Portugal. He holds both a BSc (2021) and an MSc (2023) in Electrical Engineering – Power Systems from ISEP. In his MSc, he obtained the highest thesis grade, 20/20, with the dissertation Optimal Planning of a Medium Voltage Distribution Network Considering Uncertainty and Remuneration of Distributed Resources. Since 2024, he has been pursuing a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering at ISEP under the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) doctoral scholarship 2024.01436.BD, developing the project SENSE – Strategic Distribution Network Planning in Smart-Grid Environment: A Geospatial Multi-Stage Stochastic Risk-Based Emission-Aware Tool. His research focuses on the planning and operation of modern electrical distribution networks, with particular emphasis on distribution network expansion planning, stochastic and risk-aware optimization, uncertainty modeling, carbon emission assessment, geospatial analysis, and the integration of distributed energy resources, including renewable generation, energy storage systems, and electric vehicles. His work aims to support the transition toward more sustainable, resilient, and economically efficient smart grids through advanced optimization and decision-support methodologies. Throughout his research career, Fábio has authored and co-authored more than 20 scientific publications, including 6 journal papers published in internationally recognized journals such as Applied Energy, Energy Conversion and Management, Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks, Renewable Energy Focus, and Mathematics and Computers in Simulation. His publication record also includes conference papers and book chapters published by IEEE, Springer, and Elsevier. His scientific contributions span topics such as multi-stage and multi-investment distribution planning, resource remuneration, emissions-aware planning, second-life batteries, geospatial network analysis, power tracing, optimal power flow, and risk-based operational scheduling. In addition to publications, he has contributed to research reproducibility and collaboration through the development and publication of open-access datasets for electrical distribution networks. He has also co-supervised a Master’s dissertation in Electrical Engineering related to geospatial mapping and visualization for medium-voltage network expansion support. Fábio has been involved in several national and European research and innovation initiatives, including NGS, F4ITECH, and SEBCoVE, where he has contributed both as a researcher and in collaborative project activities. He also maintains an active role in the scientific community through peer review for journals such as Applied Energy, Sustainable Cities and Society, Frontiers in Energy Research, and Electric Power Systems Research. In parallel, he has participated in scientific and organizational activities, including serving on the scientific committee of ICSC-Cities and contributing to the organization of international academic events such as the SEBCoVE Porto General Meeting 2025. His academic merit has been recognized through distinctions such as the DGES Merit Scholarship (2022/2023). Overall, his work is driven by the development of rigorous and practical methodologies for low-carbon, data-driven, and adaptive energy systems.
