Nuno Lapa has held the position of Assistant Professor at the NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT) of NOVA University Lisbon (NOVA) since 2004. Since January 2014, he has served as an Integrated Researcher within the Associated Laboratory for Green Chemistry - Clean Technologies and Processes (LAQV) of the REQUIMTE research network. This network, funded by the Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology, stands as the largest Portuguese network in Chemistry & Chemical Engineering. Dr. Lapa's research endeavors are centered within the “Materials for Adsorption and Catalysis Group” (MAC) of LAQV-REQUIMTE. In 2004, Dr. Lapa earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from NOVA FCT, focusing on eco-compatibility studies of novel materials for civil engineering. His research was grounded in the reuse of bottom ashes from Municipal Solid Waste incineration plants and conducted under the auspices of the European project VALOMAT, in collaboration with various European companies (Soletanche-Bachy, Inertec, SOLVAY, and Sobry) and funded by the European Commission (EC) under FP6. Within the Department of Chemistry (DQ), Dr. Lapa assumes instructional responsibilities across several courses, including the Master's Programme in Bioenergy, the Master's Programme in Engineering of Renewable Energies, the Doctoral Programme in Bioenergy, and the Doctoral Programme in Sustainable Chemistry. From 2014 to 2021, Dr. Lapa served as an Associate Editor of the scientific journal Waste Management (Elsevier), transitioning to the Editorial Board in January 2022. Additionally, he serves as an External Expert for various entities, including the Research Executive Agency (European Commission), the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (European Commission), and the Portuguese Agency for Innovation (ANI). Dr. Lapa's current research activities encompass several key areas: 1. Developing innovative strategies for the valorization of organic and inorganic wastes towards a Circular Economy: (i) Production of biochars and nanocarbon materials from organic biowastes. (ii) Utilization of biochars and nanocarbon materials in wastewater treatment, metal recovery, and industrial gas flow treatment systems. 2. Conducting environmental risk assessments of new materials derived from wastes using chemical and ecotoxicity methods. 3. Optimizing biological processes for organic waste valorization: (i) Enhancing biogas and biomethane production via anaerobic digestion. (ii) Optimizing biohydrogen production through dark fermentation. 4. Assessing the sustainability of new products and processes using methodologies such as Life Cycle Assessment, Carbon Footprint, and Life Cycle Costing. Dr. Lapa's contributions to the field are evident through his extensive publication record, comprising over 133 national and international papers, books, book chapters, conference papers, and posters at national and international conferences since 1994. He holds an h-index of 24, with 1765 citations across 1546 documents and collaborating with 170 co-authors (source: Scopus, February 17, 2024).
