Filipa Pires is an early-career researcher working at the interface of biomaterials, nanotechnology, and biomedical engineering, with a strong focus on the development of responsive materials and advanced drug-delivery systems for regenerative medicine and therapeutic monitoring. She obtained a BSc in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Beira Interior (2011), where she acquired interdisciplinary training in cell and molecular biology, human physiology, disease mechanisms, pharmacology, and biomaterials science. Seeking advanced expertise in nanotechnology and biomaterial design, she pursued an MSc in Bioengineering and Nanosystems at Instituto Superior Técnico (2013). Her MSc thesis focused on the development of electrically conductive scaffolds for tissue engineering, through which she gained practical experience in neural stem cell culture as well as in biocompatibility and bioactivity assessment of biomaterials. Between 2014 and 2015, she contributed as a Master Fellow to two research projects addressing biomedical sensing and drug delivery. These projects involved the development of conductive textiles for physiological monitoring and nanocarrier-based drug delivery systems for glaucoma treatment. Through this work, she developed expertise in optical techniques for drug-release analysis and mathematical modelling to quantify and predict drug release kinetics. She completed her PhD in Biophysics at NOVA School of Science and Technology in 2019. Her doctoral research focused on the design of liposomal nanocarriers for the encapsulation of antioxidants and anticancer drugs to improve pharmacokinetics and therapeutic efficacy. During this period, she expanded her expertise in radiation biophysics by attending the highly competitive Berlin Neutron School and Berlin Photon School, where she received advanced training in synchrotron-based analytical techniques. She undertook a research stay at the Institute of Physics of São Carlos, where she developed expertise in Langmuir monolayers, enabling detailed studies of drug–phospholipid interactions and membrane biophysics. Following her PhD, she worked as a Junior Researcher in the BeLive project (2020–2022), where she specialized in the synthesis and functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles and their integration into biomaterial scaffolds designed to promote angiogenesis. Within this project, she also co-supervised two MSc students who developed nanocarrier-functionalized magnetic scaffolds containing anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory agents to enhance therapeutic angiogenesis in injured cardiac tissue. From 2022 to 2025, she participated in the european project RESORB, contributing to the development of the first fully bioresorbable implantable optoelectronic device capable of activating fluorescent anticancer agents in vivo. This work expanded her expertise into implantable bioelectronic systems and advanced responsive biomaterials. More recently, she joined Instituto de Telecomunicações as an Assistant Researcher, where she contributes to strengthening the Organic Electronics group and establishing new research directions focused on implantable responsive devices for controlled drug delivery and real-time biological sensing. She has authored 12 peer-reviewed scientific articles (9 as first author) published in Q1 international journals, 6 book chapters (5 as first author), and 9 peer-reviewed conference papers (4 as first author). Her work has accumulated over 540 citations, with an h-index of 9. She has presented 15 abstracts at national and international conferences, including 10 oral presentations. In addition to her publication record, she has co-supervised MSc students and has been actively involved in the organization of academic and scientific events, contributing to the dissemination of scientific knowledge and community engagement.
