Campo de Estudo: Pulverotecnologia aplicada ao desenvolvimento de novos materiais metálicos e cerâmicos, com especial enfoque no processamento e caracterização de cerâmicos técnicos. No caso dos cerâmicos à base de silício (Si3N4, SiC), estudou, também, o respectivo desempenho à corrosão a altas temperaturas. Participou em projetos na área da síntese de pós de carbonetos por irradiação solar (para aplicações na indústria do metal duro) e de pós de fosfatos de cálcio por precipitação química (para o revestimento de próteses da anca e do joelho e para o fabrico de implantes porosos destinados à regeneração de tecidos ósseos); do processamento de cerâmicos à base de cordierite sob as formas densa (para aplicações termoeléctricas) e muito porosa (para suportes de catalisadores destinados à redução de emissões de gases poluentes); do processamento de cerâmicos à base de hidroxiapatite sob as formas densa (para próteses ortopédicas) e muito porosa (para implantes); caracterização físico-química, estrutural e mecânica dos materiais desenvolvidos; da cozedura de porcelana em fornos de gás contínuos assistida por microondas; da síntese por mechanical alloying seguida de consolidação por microondas de eletrólitos sólidos à base de óxido de lântanio dopado com germânio e silício para pilhas de combustível do tipo óxido. Nos últimos cinco anos, esteve envolvido nos projetos de aplicação da energia solar concentrada (CSP) ao processamento de materiais e à produção de combustíveis solares, designadamente na produção de hidrogénio verde, a partir de ecocerâmicas de céria, pela via termoquímica solar (ciclo redox de separação da água); na síntese de nitretos de metais de transição em atmosfera de amónia e na avaliação do desempenho ao choque térmico de recetores solares volumétricos por exposição direta a radiação solar (CSP). Esta atividade foi realizada em colaboração com o Laboratório do PROMES-CNRS (Odeillo, França) e Plataforma Solar de Almería (Tabernas, Espanha) no âmbito dos projetos SFERA 2 - Solar Facilities for the European Research Area-Second Phase (Grant agreement ID: 312643) enquadrado no Programa FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES - Specific Programme "Capacities": Research infrastructures (2014.01.01-2017.12.31) e SFERA III - Solar Facilities for the European Research Area - Third Phase (Grant agreement ID: 823802) enquadrado no Programa H2020-EU.1.4.1.2. - Integrating and opening existing national and regional research infrastructures of European interest (2019.01.01 com a duração de 36 meses). ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Powder technology applied to the development of new materials, both metallic and ceramics, with special focus on technical ceramics, namely silicon nitride and silicon carbide including their processing and high temperature corrosion behaviour. Other areas of interest include (a) synthesis of carbides under concentrated solar radiation (for hard metals industry), (b) hydroxyapatite powders (for coatings of medical prosthesis and production of implants for bone regeneration), (c) development of both dense and porous cordierite (for thermoelectrical appliances and catalyst substrates for reduction of NOx and VOCs emissions), (d) microwave-assisted gas firing of porcelain for tableware, (e) synthesis of lanthanum-based apatites powders by mechanical allowing consolidated by microwave sintering for intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cell electrolytes. In the past five years, main research activities were devoted to the application of concentrated solar heating to processing of materials and production of solar fuels, mainly green hydrogen, by the two-step water splitting thermochemical cycle using cork-derived ceria ecoceramics (H2CORK project) as well as synthesis of d-transition metak nitrides in flowing ammonia atmospheres and thermal shock evaluation of candidate materials for volumetric solar receiver
