Susana P. Lopes (SPL) completed the Integrated Masters in Biological Engineering from the University of Minho (UM) on 10th December 2007. She then enrolled in a Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering (with an internship at Calgary University, Canada). After completing her Ph.D. (10th December 2013; UM), she has been developing research work at the Centre of Biological Engineering from UM (CEB-UM) as an FCT post-doc fellow (2014-2019) and a hired Junior Researcher (2019-), suspended by two maternity leaves. Currently, she is an Assistant Researcher at CEB-UM, and the LIBRO's Associate Director (Laboratory of Biofilm Research Rosário Oliveira). SPL authored 22 (1st-10; last-3; corresp.-13) published papers and one preprint (>700 citations, h=18; Scopus), including 1 paper highlighted for Spotlight. SL published 4 book chapters (1st author of 3). SPL has participated in ~50 communications in scientific events, of which ~20 were scientific talks (invited-4), and ~30 in poster format. To date, SPL has completed (co-)supervision of 11 MSc Students (+2 ongoing) and mentored 13 researchers/students, including 2 doctorate researchers. SPL was the main arguer of 7 MSc dissertations (3 out of CEB), 3 MSc Projects, and 1 MSc Curricular Internship Report. She is a member of the BBIOFILMs research group (CEB-UM). She has been involved in 20 projects (2 as the Principal Investigator (PI); 2 as a team member; and the remaining as a researcher/contributor/participant, supported by international/national funds. SPL was the PI of 2 FCT projects: POLY-PrevEnTT ref. POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029841 and POLYmix-POLYmic ref. 2022.06595.PTDC, obtaining total funding of 274.907,60EUR. SPL collaborates with the study groups on biofilms (ESGB) and nosocomial infections (ESGNI) of ESCMID and participates in several working groups of the COST Actions CA 21145 (EURESTOP) and Ca 23152 (RegulatoryToolBox). The applicant has extended expertise in respiratory infections associated with polymicrobial biofilms, having advanced multi-disciplinary knowledge on their pathogenesis/diagnosis/therapeutics; innovative antibiofilm biomaterials; novel molecular diagnostic tools; bacterial-bacterial interactions; infection models; combinatorial drug therapies. SPL has been involved in teaching activities (9 subjects) from varied classes of the Masters in Biomedical Engineering, Biological Engineering, and other courses. She has also served as a project evaluator for the Poland OPUS Funding Scheme and PRESTIGE Programme, co-financed by EU Marie Curie Actions-COFUND, and ad-hoc reviewer for many peer-reviewed Q1 journals. SPL is an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports (Nature Group) and Microbiotechnology (specialty edition of Frontiers), and Guest Editor of several journal special issues (Frontiers in Microbiology; Antibiotics). She has been actively engaged in science management and knowledge dissemination activities, including many CEB-UM outreach events (she represents the Heath line in the organization committee). She was a member of the organizing committee of several editions of the International Practical Biofilm Course and the BIOFILM group monthly seminars (CEB-UM). SPL is an integrated member of the CEB-UM and Labbels Ass. Lab' Scientific Committees. She has been awarded 10 distinctions, including awards to participate in relevant scientific meetings, several fellowships, and scholar merit awards. SPL attended several courses/workshops/symposia; co-invented BioPlate (high-throughput platform for biofilm formation/analysis-patent under preparation); and collaborated in the creation of 4 publicly available databases related to her research activity. Her multidisciplinary investigation has aided the establishment of strong/successful national/international collaborations (co-authorship of scientific papers/technological productions/projects).
