Duarte Neiva concluded the Integrated Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering in 2009 from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon University (UL) and the PhD in Sustainable Forests and Products in 2020 from the School of Agriculture (ISA), Lisbon University. He is currently a researcher in the Forest Research Center (CEF, ISA) associated to the ForTec group (Forest products and biorefineries). Since 2014 has published 23 articles in peer-reviewed journals (8 as leading author), has done multiple reviews for 13 journals and participated in 4 projects. Since 2019 co-organizes a periodic (once a month) scientific dissemination event "Coffee with Science", aiming at closer collaboration between the different groups that compose CEF. His field of experties are: Biorefinery; Chemical characterization of wood and non-wood lignocellulosic material (especially focused on tree barks); Chemical and bio-chemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass (e.g. hydrothermal and acid/alkaline catalysed pre-treatments, enzymatic hydrolysis); Pulp and paper production and respective characterization; Fine chemical analysis of extractives, polysaccharides and lignin through several techniques such as GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC, Py-MS, Py-TMAH, DFRC, modified DFRC, HSQC and HMQC; Antioxidant and antimicrobial (human pathogenic strains) activities of lignocellulosic biomass extractives.
