Duarte Neiva concluded the Integrated Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering in 2009 from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon University (UL) and the PhD in Sustainable Forests and Products in 2020 from the School of Agriculture (ISA), Lisbon University. He is currently a auxiliar researcher for LA TERRA (ISA) associated to the ForTec group (Forest products and biorefineries). Since 2014 has published 25 articles in peer-reviewed journals (8 as leading author), has done 33 peer-reviews for 16 journals, participated in 5 projects, and is a Review Editor on the Editorial Board of Plant Breeding (specialty section of Frontiers in Plant Science). He is currently supervising a PhD and two Environmental Engineering students MSc thesis besides supervising (both in the past and present) part of the lab work of several PhD students. In 2020 was awarded with the University of Seville-Bruker prize for its impact in the field of Applied NMR. In 2019-2020 co-organized a periodic (once a month) scientific dissemination event "Coffee with Science", an is currently organising the Terra a Terra seminars. His field of expertise revolve around biorefinery more specifically in: chemical characterization of wood and non-wood lignocellulosic materials (particularly focused on tree barks and agriculture/forestry residues); chemical and bio-chemical fractionation and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass (e.g. hydrothermal and acid/alkaline catalyzed pre-treatments, enzymatic hydrolysis); evaluate pulping potential of wood and non-wood materials and respective pulp and paper characterization; fine chemical analysis of extractives, polysaccharides and lignin (through a multitude of techniques such as GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC, Py-MS, Py-TMAH, DFRC, modified DFRC); and antioxidant and antimicrobial (human pathogenic strains) potential of lignocellulosic biomass extractives. He likes to work in a diverse and multidisciplinary environment learning new competences and lending his set of skills to help solve any particular problem at hand.
