Paulo Fernandes holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, from the University of Porto's Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, obtained on October 24, 1994. He also holds a Degree in Biochemistry from the same University, which he obtained in September 1989.Currently, Paulo Fernandes serves as a Coordinating Professor at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo, Superior School of Technology and Management, is member of CISAS - Center for Research and Development in Agrifood Systems and Sustainability and is responsible for the Microbiology laboratory at the same institution. He regularly publishes in specialized journals and contributed to 3 book chapters, having co-supervised 2 PhD thesis. His research interests lie in the field of Biological Sciences, with a particular focus on Microbiology. He has actively participated in various research projects, including serving as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 1 project, a Researcher in 10 projects, and the principal investigator in 1 project. His research endeavors are mainly focused on exploring microbial diversity and dynamics, microbial inactivation, and food microbiology
