Nuno Fonseca is a bioinformatics scientist and Head of IT and Bioinformatics at BIOPOLIS/CIBIO. He brings a diverse background in computer science, artificial intelligence, and bioinformatics, with experience in both academia and industry. Earned a first degree in Computer Science, an M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence and Computation, and a PhD in exploiting parallelism in multi-relational learning at the University of Porto. Held positions as a lecturer and researcher in academia, and as a senior programmer, system administrator, and department manager in industry. More precisely, as: a Postdoctoral fellow at the Molecular Evolution group in the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (Portugal); a Senior research scientist at INESC-TEC (Portugal); a research scientist at EMBL-EBI (jointly in John Marioni and Alvis Brazma groups); a Project Leader for high-throughput sequencing data analysis and management in the Expression Atlas team at EMBL-EBI; the ERA Chair in Environmental Metagenomics at CIBIO/InBIO (2018); and Bioinformatics scientist and Head of IT and Bioinformatics at BIOPOLIS/CIBIO (since 2023). Co-authored three book chapters and more than seventy papers in internationally peer-reviewed book series or journals (including Nature, Nature Genetics, Genome Research, Cell, and Nucleic Acids Research).
