Rui Jorge Cordeiro Silva. Currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of Nova University Lisbon (FCT-UNL) in the Department of Materials Science (DCM) and Researcher at the Materials Research Center of the Institute of Nanostructures, Nanomodelling and Nanofabrication (CENIMAT/i3N). He completed his PhD in Materials Science, specializing in Metallurgy at FCT-UNL (1999) and a Graduation's degree (5 years) in Metallurgical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (1985). His teaching and research activities focus on the processing, characterization (elemental, microstructural, crystallographic, and mechanical), corrosion and protection of metallic materials. Responsible/Coordinator of the units of Physical Metallurgy, Heat and Mechanical Treatments, Surface Degradation and Protection, and Materials Characterization Techniques at FCT-UNL for the courses of Materials Engineering, Micro and Nanotechnologies Engineering, and Conservation and Restoration at FCT-UNL. Supervisor of 6 PhDs, 30 master's degrees, and 19 pre-Bologna bachelor's degrees. Author in 126 journals indexed in the Web of Science (WoS). Among these publications, studies on metallic materials (72 publications) stand out, focusing on compositional and microstructural characterization resulting from their thermo-mechanical processing: copper alloys (46 publications), shape memory alloys (36), ferrous alloys (10), gold or silver alloys (7), and lightweight alloys (2). The main analytical techniques supporting this research were: optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE), and Raman spectroscopy. Regarding the characterization of electrochemical response in oxidation-reduction processes, the main techniques were: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open circuit potentials (OCP), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). He participated as a researcher in 10 national projects and 1 international project and 14 mini-projects on synchrotron X-ray utilization (ESRF, Grenoble). Received 1 Scientific Research award (Santander Totta - Nova University Lisbon Collaborative Research Award).
