Henrique Girao (HG) is Principal Investigator and Group Leader (Group of Ubiquitin-dependent proteolysis and Intercellular Communication - GUIC) at the Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research (iCBR) - Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC). HG has been interested in understanding how disturbance of ubiquitin-dependent lysosomal degradation and intercellular communication, mediated by gap junctions and extracellular vesicles, contribute to cardiovascular disorders. In recent years HG has been interested on non-canonical functions of Cx43 and their impact in heart pathophysiology. He reported that Cx43 participates in selective sorting of miRNAs into EV, forms functional channels at the nuclear membrane, modulating gene expression in cardiac cells, and plays a regulatory role in phagolysosome dynamics. HG is the director of iCBR, deputy-director for R&D at FMUC and coordinator of the Group of Cellular and Translational Cardiology that brings together basic researchers and clinicians at Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB-UC). HG belongs to the Biobank Scientific Committee and Strategic Council of Clinical Academic Centre of Coimbra that integrates healthcare providers, academia and research infrastructures. HG has secured around 1.5 million in 5 FCT funded projects and published >100 papers in peer-reviewed journals including the prestigious Circ Res, Science Advances, EMBO Rep, Cardiovasc Res, Nat Rev Cardiology, Elife, Life Sci Alliance, Trends Cell Biol, Trends Mol Med, Autophagy, Molec Cell Proteomics and J Extracell Vesicles. HG is vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Extracellular Vesicles and Associate Editor of the prestigious J Extracell Vesicles. HG served as Management Committee member in COST Actions (PROTEOSTASIS, EU-CARDIOPROTECTION, EU-METAHEART) and integrated ESC Nucleus Cell Biology of the Heart, the TWINNING EVCA (Advisory Board), and the teams of TWINNING ResetAgeing, TEAMMINGs MIA and GeneT, and 2 ERA CHAIRs at University of Coimbra. HG is often invited to assess grant applications [e.g.National Science Foundations of Switzerland, Poland, Flanders and France, la Caixa Fellowships, British Heart Foundation, Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions]. As invited speaker, HG participated in several meetings [e.g.American Physiology Summit (2024), Experimental Biology 2021, Proteostasis EMBO Workshop (2019), European Society for Clinical Investigation meeting (2019)], and chaired numerous scientific sessions [e.g.International GJ Conference (2022), COST (2022,2016) HG coordinates the Master in Biomedical Research and the PhD Programme in Health Sciences and integrates the Scientific Council of the Doctoral Program in Nursing. HG organized >50 advanced courses of MSc and PhD programs. In the past 5 years, HG supervised/co-supervised 7 PhD Theses (+10 ongoing), 34 Master Theses and 9 Posdocs, and integrated the Jury of 37 PhD Defenses (21 as main opponent). HG has launched a Health Communication Laboratory, at the FMUC to promote scientific culture and literacy in the society. In 2015, HG launched the Portuguese network in basic and translational research in cardiology PT_Beat, to foster synergies between Portuguese research groups working on cardiovascular field.
