Maria Mendes completed the degree in Medical Chemistry in 2014 and obtained her Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Technology with the final grade of 18/20, at the University of Coimbra (UC). Her good performance in the master's degree allowed to win a merit scholarship. In 2015, she completed a theoretical and practical cell culture course at the University of Porto, and in 2017 she achieved the course of laboratory animal science at the UC. In 2017, she obtained a PhD grant from FCT (SFRH/BD/133996/2017), specializing in Pharmaceutical Technology. She started conducting scientific research in 2016, within the scope of a research project (PTDC/CTM-NAN/2658/2014) developed in the group of Macromolecules, Colloids, and Photochemistry at CQC. Since then, she has always been involved in research activities comprising the development of colloidal systems for oral, transdermal, and intravenous administration. She also carries out cell cultures studies and animal manipulation. Currently, she is a PhD student, and she has developed a versatile nanotechnology-based carrier that allows a complementary targeted brain drug delivery for GB treatment and diagnosis, employing strategies to hamper tumor cells proliferation and resistance mechanisms. Her research focuses on nanotechnology and the development of targeted drug delivery systems. Since 2016, she collaborate in the supervision of master students. She is the author of 7 book chapters and 14 scientific articles, which have been cited 244 times by other international researchers, and 16 panel communications at scientific meetings and has 1 international patent application entitled "Dual nanostructured lipid carriers as a multifunctional platform for brain tumor therapy".
