Vítor Manuel da Silva Ferreira is a biochemist (2012-2015) and master in Health Sciences (2015-2017) from University of Minho, Portugal. Ove the last 2 years he has been part of Professor Angela M. Valverde laboratory in the Instituto de Investigaciones biomédicas “Alberto Sols” (IIBm) in Madrid, Spain. During his bachelor's project, he got interested in neurosciences, namely the study of neurologic diseases. Supervised by Doctor Vitor Pinto, their goal was to understand how Alzheimer’s disease (AD) differently affected the hippocampal axis of an AD mice model, the J20 mice. Afterwards in his master degree in Health Sciences, he became a collaborator in the Neuroimmunology research line, oriented by Doctor Fernanda Marques and Professor Joana Palha. In this work, they characterized immunophenotypically the J20 AD model, giving relevance to the peripheral organs and blood characterization in the disease progression. Simultaneously, he collaborated in a project with Doctor Ricardo Taipa, where they studied neuroinflammation in the hippocampus of early and late onset AD patients, work from which a paper was published. Of interest, Vítor has been part of the ITN-TREATMENT (GA 721236) consortium with an Early Stage Researcher Marie Sklodowska-Curie scholarship and for the last 2 years he is working in the IIBm, under the supervision of Professor Valverde. The specific objective of his work was to unravel the impact in the whole body glucose homeostasis in an 8 weeks intraperitoneal treatment with the second generation antipsychotic Olanzapine. This work was presented in several congresses, symposia and meetings. Furthermore, they published two reviews on the topic, and are preparing a paper on the aforementioned research work for submission. All these experiences allowed him to be better prepared for developing laboratorial work in an independent and critical way in the interface of pharmacological side effects, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, insulin sensitivity and thermogenic function.
