I graduated in Chemical Engineering/Biotechnology (15/20) from Instituto Superior Técnico, UTL in 2001 and did my PhD in Biotechnology in 2006 at the same institution. My research, under Prof. Joaquim Cabral’s supervision and Prof. Karl-Erich Jaeger from the Institut für Molecular Enzymtechnologie, Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf focused on in vitro evolution of lipolytic enzymes, emphasizing on improving their stability in the presence of surfactants. This led to 5 publications (2 as first and correspondent author and a journal cover). In 2006, I joined the Microbial and Enzyme Technology group at ITQB NOVA to pursue postdoctoral studies mentored by Prof. Lígia O. Martins and later an Auxiliary Researcher. My research focuses on the evolution and biochemical characterization of oxidoreductive bacterial enzymes (multicopper oxidases, azo/quinone reductases, and DyP-type peroxidases), aiming to enhance their biotechnological applications and gain mechanistic insights. Since 2018, I am a Researcher in Prof. Lígia O. Martins’ group at ITQB NOVA where I have honed my skills in various aspects of applied biotechnology, particularly in protein engineering and evolution, a cutting-edge area where I specialize in applying directed evolution methodologies and have mastered molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology techniques. Overall, I have 34 publications: 27 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, two as corresponding author (times cited:+1000) and 7 peer-reviewed conference proceedings, 1 book chapter, 27 oral and 52 poster communications at national and international conferences. I was the PI of an exploratory project and the Co-PI of a national project and collaborated on 3 national and 2 EU projects. Currently, I am Co-PI of the national project “Broadening the spectrum of biocatalysts, bioprocesses, and bio-products in industrial biotechnology (Biocat4Suschem)” and team member of COZYME (COST-Action; https://cozyme.eu/) and McGEA (MSCA-Staff Exchange). I am/was involved in protein engineering approaches and enzyme production, purification, and characterization. I have co-supervised 6 M.Sc., 5 graduate, 9 undergraduate, 2 Erasmus, 5 summer internships, 8 lab rotations and 6 high-school students. Additionally, I mentored younger team members, contributing to both the team's success and the professional development of my colleagues. From 2017 to 2021, I took the role of instructor, delivering both theoretical and hands-on sessions for the Biocatalysis unit in two programs: the Master's degree in Biotechnology for Sustainability and the PhD in Sustainable Chemistry. Simultaneously, I held the position of Invited Assistant Professor at the Escola Superior Tecnológica do Barreiro of Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal, contributing to the Master's program in Chemical and Biological Engineering.
