Laura Coelho has a bachelor's degree in Biology from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto and did her master's degree in Applied Ecology in 2021 at the University of Aveiro. She started her research in 2019, at the University of Aveiro, during her MSc studies. She addressed the effects of wildfires ashes, namely of ash-related toxicants such as metals and PAHs, on the skin microbiome of the Iberian frog. She focused on the cultivable bacterial isolates with antimicrobial activity, and assessed their growth when exposed to a series of dilutions of eucalyptus aqueous ash extracts, from moderate and high severity wildfires. During this period, she gained experience with ecotoxicological and antimicrobial assays and she also gained experience with capturing and handling amphibians; amphibian skin microbiome sampling techniques; preparation of culture media and aqueous ash extracts; and isolation and preservation of cultivable bacteria. Laura Coelho has published 3 poster communications and 3 oral communications in international and national meetings, and 2 submitted papers in Q1 journals. She works in the area(s) of Natural Sciences with an emphasis on Biological Sciences. The keywords of her research include, amphibians, skin microbiome, bacteria, microbiology, ecotoxicology, and wildfires.

Institution / Organization
2022/03/22 - 2022/03/23 I have attended the online theoretical extracurricular classes of the “Training School The 3 R's in amphibian ecotoxicology”, organized within the COST action PERIAMAR and the research project Gogofrog. The classes addressed theoretical aspects of in vitro and in silico approaches, which integrate the 3 R's of animal alternatives, to be used at different stages of chemicals risk assessment for amphibians.
Seminar
"Training School The 3 R's in amphibian ecotoxicology"
Universidade de Aveiro Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar, Portugal
2019 - 2019/11/19 The activity consisted on a lecture about amphibians, followed by a night field trip to two public parks, in Aveiro, in order to find some species. During the night field trip, we visit the “Parque de Santo António” and the “Parque da Macaca” we found exemplars from four different species of amphibians: Salamandra salamandra and Lissotriton boscai, Triturus marmuratus and Pelophylax perezi. Saída de campo de Herpetologia "Bichos da Noite"
Núcleo de Estudantes de Biologia da Associação Académica da Universidade de Aveiro (NEB-AAUAv), Portugal
2019/02/15 - 2019/02/17 This workshop included two days of theoretical lectures on the work of CERVAS and other recovery centers in Portugal, the most frequent animals, and the reasons for their entry into the centers. It ended with hands-on sessions that allowed participants to train different techniques of identification, capture, handling, physical examination, and basic retrieval procedures with over 80 different species of wild animals.
