Robert Wiley holds a Doctorate in Plastic Arts from the Universidade do Porto, specializing in Sculpture. He was award the terminal academic degree in Fine Arts in North America, the MFA (Master of Fine Arts) from The Ohio State University, where he also earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus on glass. As an Invited Assistant Professor in the Department of Conservation and Restoration at NOVA University of Lisbon, his work is centered within the VICARTE Research Unit, where he investigates glass and ceramics in the arts. In addition to maintaining an active artistic exhibition record driven by his research, he collaborates with interdisciplinary teams studying glass and ceramics. His research explores not only the properties and historical significance of these materials in relation to technological advancements but also their formation and crafting processes as a means of developing new pedagogical approaches in both art and science. A key member of the VICARTE Master’s program in Glass and Ceramics Art and Science, he mentors emerging artists and scientists, supervising Master’s theses, leading workshops, and developing innovative tools for crafting. His contributions include journal articles, book chapters, conference presentations, and posters, as well as the organization and participation in events and projects across the European Union.
