Joana Almeida's path has been one of dedication and active involvement, both in scientific research and community engagement. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa with a grade of 16/20, earning recognition with an academic merit diploma in her first year. During her bachelor's degree, Joana took part in the Ulisses program with the theme “Oceans without plastics” organised by UNITE!, which deepened her knowledge about the ocean’s dynamics and the pressing issue of plastic pollution. This experience broadened her horizons, allowing her to work with international and multidisciplinary teams and develop her problem-solving skills. Continuing her academic journey, Joana pursued a Master's Degree in Biotechnology at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Under the guidance of Professor Frederico Ferreira and Doctor Nuno Faria, from 2BRG (Bioprocess and Biotransformation Research Group) iBB (Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences)-IST, she conducted research on sustainable biological surfactants production and their application in soil remediation and agriculture. Her thesis, which received a grade of 19/20, enhanced her experiment-planning skills and proficiency in analytical techniques in unexplored research areas. Not content with merely exploring scientific frontiers, Joana ventured into the field of entrepreneurship participating in programs like Lab2market@Técnico and Blue Bio Value Ideation, in the latter the team’s pitch was awarded with the first prize and 5 thousand euros. These experiences helped her develop entrepreneurial knowledge, pitching skills and build connections within the Portuguese industry, mainly in the cosmetics and blue bioeconomy sectors. These activities culminated in the establishment of SurfACTinnov LDA, a spin-off from IST that aims to bring the green and efficient biosurfactants developed in academia to the market. Joana's academic pursuits were complemented by hands-on experiences in the field. A month-long internship at Allmicroalgae, a microalgae production facility, provided her with invaluable insights into large-scale cultivation techniques and biochemical analysis, further enriching her skill set. Beyond academia and entrepreneurship, Joana's is actively involved in her community through her volunteering at Corpo Nacional de Escutas. Since the age of 7, she has dedicated herself to this cause, volunteering at various associations and assuming leadership roles within her scout group, acquiring problem-solving, time-management and event-planning skills. Currently, she is undertaking pedagogy courses to become a scout chief and is responsible for the 14-18 years old group. In summary, Joana Almeida's journey combines academic pursuits, practical experience, and community involvement. Her commitment to making a positive impact, both in academia and within her community, sets her apart as a dedicated and motivated individual.
