Andreia Ruivo graduated in Chemistry at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) in 2005. She started working at the Research Unit Vicarte in 2006 in the synthesis of luminescent glasses and enamels doped with lanthanide oxides to obtain different colours and in the development of new techniques for the synthesis of gold and copper ruby glass using gamma irradiation. This work allowed her to obtain a master's degree in Chemistry at FCUL, "Ruby glass synthesis by reduction of Au+ and Cu+ and formation of nanoparticles" (2008). From 2009 to 2013, she earned her PhD in Sustainable Chemistry, working on the synthesis and characterization of innovative luminescent glasses for artistic applications in collaboration with the Photochemistry and Supramolecular Chemistry Research Group (LAQV-Requimte) and the Glass and Ceramic for the Arts Research unit (Vicarte), at NOVA FCT. During these years, her research focused on producing innovative luminescent glasses using lanthanide oxides, along with other elements such as lead halides and copper. She conducted structural and spectroscopic characterizations of all the glasses produced. Subsequently, within funded projects, Andreia Ruivo investigated the luminescence and structural properties of borosilicate glasses doped with lanthanide oxides. She also developed photochromic and photoluminescent compounds embedded in nanoporous hosts such as zeolites. In 2020, in the Competitive Contract Grant - Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus of FCT, she was awarded a 6-year contract as Assistant Researcher (2020.00252.CEECIND) with the project "LumiGLAD - Sustainable LUMInescent GLasses for Art and Design". Since 2024, she holds a permanent position as an Assistant Researcher at the LAQV Associated Laboratory/VICARTE, awarded through an open contest published in the Diário da República, focusing on developing sustainable glass and ceramic materials for innovation in art and industry. She has also started to work on the reproduction and characterization of historical recipes of glasses, enamels and grisailles in the area of cultural heritage. Andreia Ruivo is an integrated member of the VICARTE Research Unit, classified as excellent by FCT and a member of Associate Laboratory LAQV. She is now one of the Organic Unit Sub-directors of VICARTE and the team leader of the Unit's research line, "Material Innovation for Sustainability and Communities". She is also responsible for the chemistry laboratory and acquiring laboratory materials and chemical compounds. As the main methodologies, she uses standard synthetic methods, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, continuous photochemical irradiation, steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, dilatometry, X-ray fluorescence, differential scanning calorimetry and different microscopy techniques. She published 26 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 1 book chapters as the corresponding author and has received 1 best poster award. Organized 21 events, including conferences, exhibitions and workshops. Andreia Ruivo supervised/co-supervised 12 MSc dissertations (2 ongoing) and 3 PhDs (2 ongoing). Participated in 10 research projects, being a Pos-doctoral Fellow in 1 (EU grant), Research Fellow in 3 and Researcher in 5 projects (funded by FCT and EU). Andreia Ruivo works in the areas of Exact Sciences with an emphasis on Chemical Sciences and Art and Science Interface. In her professional activities, she interacted with 241 collaborators and co-authorship scientific papers.
