Miguel Fernandes, completed the Master in Toxicologia e Contaminação Ambientais in 2014 at the Universidade do Porto Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar. In the context of the master's degree he worked with detection of chemicals, zebrafish, behaviour analysis and artificial neural networks. Published several articles in international journals. He participated as a research fellow in project HEALS - Health and Environment-wide Associations based on large population Surveys in particular, in the pilot study EXHES-Pilot European Exposure and Health Examination Survey. This study pilot, with a 'cohort' design, involves hundreds of twins in different EU countries in a general approach to the “exposome” concept. Before he participated in several works on the ecotoxicology field. He finished is Doctoral Program in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Minho in 2023, under the theme of biodegradation of plastics (PHA) in soil. He participated in several training courses, workshops and seminars, in the ecotoxicology, bioinvasions, aquaculture and analytical techniques fields. His current research interests are in the biodegradation, microbiology (bacteria and fungi) and polymers fields. . During its PhD he used several techniques for the characterization of PHA films, including FTIR, SEM, XRD, TGA and DSC. He also studied the biodegradation in soil using respirometric methods, and several methodologies to isolate and then identify bacteria and fungi. Currently he is an invited assistant researcher in the Viiafood project, working in food 3D printing, the use of byproducts for paper coating (packaging) and the composting of new packaging solutions.
