Daniel Clemente is a Post-Doctoral Researcher associated to U.Porto and CIIMAR (Portugal). His works on Civil Engineering - Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment - since his M.Sc. proof-of-concept of a novel wave energy converter (WEC) based on rolling offshore floating platforms: E-Motions. He works on developing marine renewable energy (MRE) technologies through physics-driven and data-driven methods, including AI. Daniel also studies their potential applications and synergies with other systems and fields, such as offshore aquaculture, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), desalination, green hydrogen and coastal protection. Profile highlights: i) His Ph.D. studies began in 2017 to further develop E-Motions, being successfully concluded in June 2022 (Grade A). In 2020, he was awarded an FCT Ph.D. grant (2020.05280.BD). In 2024, he received the Prof. Doutor Joaquim Sarmento 2022 Award – Best Ph.D. Thesis in Civil Engineering; ii) Project participation: Se@Ports (2017-2018) - study hybrid WECs (h-WEC) for the ports of Leixões and Las Palmas -, i.nano.WEC (2018-2020) - develop the first marine buoy incorporating highly efficient TENGs -, ATLANTIDA (2022-2023) - establish a platform for the monitoring of the North Atlantic Ocean -, and WEC4Ports (2024) - develop a novel h-WEC for seaports. He has further assisted projects such as PORTOS, OPWEC, Ocean3R, and CALOHEA, working alongside industrial (e.g. INEGI and APDL), entrepreneurial (e.g., I.nano.E and IMDC), NOPs (e.g., Fórum Oceano), academic and educational (e.g., IH Cantabria and University of Oviedo) partners; iii) Experimental expertise: 2D and 3D physical modelling of offshore and nearshore WECs, coastal protection structures and shoreline regions, in U.Porto's wave basin. Experience with wave probes, wavemaker system, load cells, motion tracking systems (Qualisys) and bed profilers; Numerical expertise: ANSYS Aqwa, DualSPHysics, SNL-SWAN, Delft3D, MATLAB Optimization Toolbox, Python, Zotero, ChatGPT, and data acquisition/processing software (e.g., HR DAQ Suite and Qualisys QTM); iv) Daniel's work has been published in peer-reviewed, indexed Q1 and Q2 journals (h-index 10, over 550 citations) of high relevance in the fields of ocean and coastal engineering, as well as sustainable energy, environment and civil engineering. To these add book chapters and numerous submissions in national and international conferences, from MARTECH to IAHR Congresses; v) Scientific missions: IACOBUS - University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain, 2018) and University of Vigo (Spain, 2019); WECANet COST ACTION CA1710 - Universities of Maynooth (Ireland, 2020), Plymouth (England, 2021) and Edinburgh (Scotland, 2022). Daniel also established contacts and visited the facilities of major MRE companies - CorPower and OceanWinds - at the INORE Symposium (Portugal, 2023); vi) Reviewer and Jury duty: over 35 reviews for reputed journals and conferences, including Applied Energy, Renewable Energy, Ocean Engineering, Water, JMSE, Maritime Engineering, JICZM and Doctoral Congress of Engineering. Ph.D. student mentor from Maynooth University since 2022, main arguer of a M.Sc. Thesis (U.Porto, 2023), and co-supervisor of a Capstone Project student (Environmental Engineering, U.Porto, 2024); vii) Daniel helped establish five European projects - e2PORTS (Interreg Atlantic Area) and HelioSea (CETPartnership) in 2023, AI.SEA.POWER and InnoWEC (FCT PeX), and SEACARE (FCT IC&TD) in 2024. Consultancy work for the IHRH - Praia das Pastoras (2018) and PROTEVS (2019); viii) Daniel has participated in numerous U.Porto and CIIMAR activities, from teaching (BEST Course and Junior University) to exhibitions (CIIMAR Open Day and Mostra U.Porto). His work has been disseminated to the general public through in-person interviews (RTP's Biosfera) and social media/news (Lusa Agency and Offshore Energy Biz). Lastly, he is a member of the European Marine Board’s ECOP and Vice-President of IAHR YPN Portugal.
