CAREER - After a degree in Biochemistry ("scientific branch") from Porto University, Maria João Amorim worked in projects in protein purification and function (1998, Univ. Wageningen, NL),coacervation (1998-2000, ESB, PT) and phase separation and transitions (2000-2001, Nova Univ., PT). Amorim was awarded a PhD in influenza research (2002-2007, Univ. of Cambridge,UK), and after developing 3 postdoctoral research projects in the UK (NIMR and Depts. of Pathology & Biochemistry of Cambridge Univ.), she returned to Portugal in 2012 to become an independent group leader at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) also in virology, an area under-represented in Portugal, despite the importance of infectious diseases for public health. Since 2022, she is a Group Leader and Vice-Director at the new research institute Católica Biomedical Research centre (CBR), a research unit of Católica Medical School, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP), and Associated Professor at the Católica Medical School, currently maintaining a double affiliation with UCP and IGC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ACHIEVEMENTS - The Amorim group is interested in how viruses interact with its different hosts. As leader of her lab since 2012, she authored 30 manuscripts, 16 of which as senior and/or corresponding author, and overall, she sums 37 peer-reviewed publications (over 1000 citations, h-index 18, Scopus), in reputable journals (J. Cell Science, Nature Comms, Cell, J Virol). She supervise(d) 4 postdocs, 10 Ph.D. students (6 ongoing, 4 in collaboration), 7 MS.c. students and several trainees (of 8 nationalities), and secured €5 M to fund her lab, including attracting an ERC Consolidator grant (overall €2,870,000.00) as principal investigator, a La Caixa grant as collaborator (overall €1,000,000.00) and a HORIZON-HLTH-2023-DISEASE-03 (overall €7,999,838.75) as collaborator, plus one FCTinvestigator and a CEEC contract to fund for her salary). The work she has been developing earned her peer-recognition, seen in the visibility and citations of her papers, and invitations to: give departmental seminars and talk in international conferences (30 since 2015); integrate evaluation panels for: PI recruitment (4); Ph.D. students selection (4); MS.c./Ph.D. examinations in several international universities (30). She serves in scientific boards, reviews for renowned funding agencies (ERC, ANR, MRC, HFSP, Wellcome Trust), and reputable journals (e.g. J.Virology, PLoS Pathogens, Nature, Nature Communications, J. Cell Science, Philosophical transactions B). She is also involved in outreach actions and has participated in many events to engage the general public, including TV and Radio broadcasts, press releases, and has participated in many outreach actions in TV, Radio broadcasts, press releases, written pieces about vaccination, virology and SARS-CoV-2/COVID (more than 60). She is an expert for the EU in a project related with SARS-CoV-2, featured in the book women in Science from Ciência Viva (2021), and is an alumni of the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP), the U.S. Department of State¿s premier professional exchange program for current and emerging leaders. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAREER BREAKS: In 2016 and 2021 she had career breaks of 5 months for maternity leave.
