Abel Nicolau holds a Master's degree in Bioengineering with a specialization in Biomedical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) and the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar (ICBAS), having defended his dissertation under the theme: "Development and validation of a low-cost tool for CPR self-training ". The prototype resulting from the dissertation was awarded by NORTEXCEL, within the scope of the MED.IDEAS program, which aims to support innovative ideas in the field of medical technologies. He was recognized with the second place in the international prize “Nicolaas Westerhof“, which distinguishes the best young researchers in the field of physiological modeling worldwide, through the cough modeling project in the hemodynamic system. This award was given at the Applied Modeling in Acute Care conference, in the Netherlands. Since 2015 he has collaborated with the Biomedical Simulation Center of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (CSB-FMUP), as a researcher and simulation technician. Since 2018, he collaborates with the Center for Research in Health Technologies and Services (CINTESIS) as an integrated non-doctoral researcher, being part of the Tech4edusim - Technologies for Education and Simulation in Healthcare group. He is currently also a student in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Research and Health Services at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto. In addition to his academic career, Abel Nicolau was one of the founders and president of the Nucleus of Bioengineering Students (NEB) and founding president of the National Association of Biomedical Engineering Students (ANEEB).
