Victor Pimentel holds a Master’s in Parasitology from the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz) and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of São Paulo. He has a strong background in Virology, Molecular Biology, Microorganism Genetics, and Bioinformatics, with extensive experience in the study of viruses such as HIV, DENV, ZIKV, and SARS-CoV-2. He specializes in HIV-1 molecular epidemiology, focusing on transmission cluster analysis, drug resistance surveillance, and viral evolution using phylogenetic, phylodynamic approaches. In the wet lab, he has developed and implemented low-cost, in-house protocols for next-generation sequencing (NGS) of partial HIV-1 genomes, tailored for resource-limited settings, particularly in the PALOP (Portuguese-speaking African countries). Complementing his lab-based work, he has designed and optimized bioinformatics pipelines for phylogenetic and phylodynamic analyses, facilitating data interpretation in molecular surveillance studies. His work bridges laboratory techniques and computational analysis to generate actionable insights into viral transmission dynamics and resistance patterns. Currently, he is a research scientist fellow at the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (IHMT | NOVA University of Lisbon), investigating determinants of antiretroviral resistance among immigrant populations in Portugal. He also completed a short-term research internship at the University of Oxford, contributing to molecular epidemiology projects with a focus on data analysis and statistical modeling. He deeply engages in HIV research in Sub-Saharan Africa, combining field-relevant solutions with high-impact scientific analysis to support global health initiatives.
