Gabriel De Freitas Batista completed the Integrated Master's degree in Chemical Engineering in March of 2021 by the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB), Portugal, and Bachelor's degree (1st cycle of studies) in Technological Chemistry in February of 2021 by the Federal Center for Technological Education of Minas Gerais (CEFET-MG), Brazil. In 2017, Gabriel was awarded a scholarship for an Undergraduate Research Project, by the Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), for one year. During this project, video technologies were applied to improve the learning of technical laboratory skills for undergraduate students. As result, one conference paper was published at a national Brazilian conference. The following year, Gabriel worked as a Tutor in Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, assisting the teacher in classes, preparing solutions, preparing and testing laboratory classes, and resolving exercises with students. Alongside, Gabriel was awarded a scholarship for an Undergraduate Research Project, founded by Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPQ) for one and half years, during this project, metallic catalysts were developed and characterized, and their application for wastewater treatment was tested. As result, one article was published in a high-impact factor international journal, and three conference papers were published in national Brazilian conferences. In 2019, Gabriel worked for four months as a quality analyst intern in a local Brazilian laboratory accredited by the ISO-17025 standard, analyzing physical-chemical parameters of wastewater for several companies in the Minas Gerais region and issuing technical reports. In September of the same year, Gabriel was selected for a scholarship to study for a master's degree in Portugal. Between September of 2019 and December of 2020, Gabriel was working on his master's degree thesis, completely written in English, evaluated with a grade of 18 out of 20, and was selected for a Portuguese scholarship with a three-month duration, named “Verão com Ciência”, founded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), highlighting the excellence of the work performed. On the thesis, it was studied how carbon catalysts, developed from wastes residues, could be used to treat landfill leachate wastewaters, resulting in one published article as the first author in a high-impact factor international journal, and three conference papers were published in international conferences, on Portugal, Brazil and Greece. After finishing the master's degree, in 2021, Gabriel was selected for an ERASMUS+ internship at the Chemical Technology Institute (ITQ), located in the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), Spain. During this four-month internship, Gabriel learned a third language, Spanish, and worked with biomass valorization using hydrogenation catalytical reactions to obtain high-value products. In 2022, Gabriel is currently working as a Research fellowship in IPB, founded by FCT, evaluating the application of residual biomass for energy production through the gasification process. Gabriel has 5 years of experience as a scientist, and his main scientific interests are focused on solving complex environmental challenges, carbon-catalysts, material characterization, wastewater treatment, residues valorizing as a source of high-value products, especially using residual biomass and municipal solid wastes.
