Lead Researcher at HyLab, responsible for Hydrogen (H2) Economy and Sustainability Pillar, with the responsibility of the development of multi-criteria assessment tools for the impact of H2 technologies and processes from a life cycle perspective, modelling prospective scenarios for integrating H2 into the energy system and the respective competitiveness factors, evaluating strategies and drawing up recommendations for energy policies. Involved in several European (H2Talent, HySeas) and national projects of PRR (H2GreenValley, H2CZero, Move2neutrality), with its industrial partners Galp, Bondalti, REN, and EDP. Expert in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool according to ISO 14040, ISO 14044 standards applied to sustainable management of hydrogen production, transport and storage, and final use technologies, as well as advanced technologies for wastewater treatment, development of biosensors, biomass valorization for biodiesel additives, and biogas production, adsorbent preparation, and use for subsequent gas purification. After having obtained the PhD in Energy and BioEnegy in 2019 at the New University of Lisbon, Faculty of Science and Technology, She was granted for Post-Doctoral fellowship in April 2020, and then contracted from April 2023 by the Research Centre of Excellence in Green Chemistry, an Associate Laboratory (REQUIMTE/LAQV) through national funds, with the charge to develop the Sustainability Research line and support REQUIMTE-LAQV research projects' with the principles of sustainable development, assuming a role of strategic importance for the host institution. She worked as sustainability expert, SimaPro/OpenLCA practitioner, and Leader of the Tasks of Environmental and Economic Sustainability Assessments, to several national projects applying the Life Cycle methodology to: (i) sustainable management, treatment, and reuse of wastewater, (ii) industrial and municipal waste valorisation for both energy and sustainable materials production, (ii) environmental sustainability of construction sector both for the refurbishment of traditional buildings, production of novel sustainable construction materials (ceramic and low-carbon concrete), (iii) biodiesel antioxidant additive, and to (iv) development of the new electrochemical platform and portable sensors. Elena Surra also performed a sustainability assessment, market analysis, and business and financial model development for the market of an additive for biodiesel developed from renewable biomass. She published 14 scientific papers and 1 book chapter, participated in 14 international conferences, and was a member of 2 European, 14 national, and international research projects as a Sustainability expert. Preparation of 6 scientific European and 17 national projects for funds raising, 9 financed. Elena Surra supervised 1 PhD (ongoing), 5 MsC students and 1 Internship, she was the Main examiner of 2 MsC defenses, examiner of 1 PhD Defense, and active reviewer of more than 25 scientific articles in HI Factor Journals. She lectured thematic modules at Sustainability Management course of Doctoral Plan in Analytic Chemistry and Sustainable Engineering at ISEP, Institute Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP/IPP); lectured workshops and classes at ISEP /IPP and Faculty of Science and Technology (FCT) at New University of Lisbon (Master course in Bioresources and Doctoral Program in BioEnergy). Before starting her Academic career in Portugal (2014), she worked from 2000 to 2006 at Golder Associates, a multinational company specialized in the remediation of contaminated lands, as project manager, implementing remediation units at several chemical and petrochemical plants in Italy.
