Luis Carvalho completed the Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciencies in 2013 in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon. During this period, Luis received a research initiation grant from the University of Lisbon and Fundação Amadeu Dias in 2010. After this grant, Luis enroled in Rui Moreira's lab in 2011 as an undergraduate student to contact with Organic Chemistry Synthesis and develop enzymatic inhibitors for Human Neutrophil Elastase. Luis enrolled in an FCT-funded PhD with Rui Moreira's lab in the Medicinal Chemistry group of the Research Institute for Medicines of the University of Lisbon, in collaboration with Instituto Nacional de Saúde Dr. Ricardo Jorge, in the field of Medicinal Chemistry, working in the derivatization of small molecule enzymatic inhibitors as probes for diagnostic purposes. During his PhD, Luis received a Fulbright grant to work at the Cravatt Lab in The Scripps Research Institute in California, where he was trained in Activity-based Protein Profiling and Proteomics. During his PhD Luis co-organized two editions of the Postgraduate iMed.ULisboa Students Meeting, participated as a representative of iMed.ULisboa in the European Researcher's Night and worked as a volunteer with Scripps Assists of The Scripps Research Institute in the Lagoon Project, which aimed at the maintenance of the Torrey Pines Natural Reserve and local event organization. Luis completed his Phd in 2020 and readily enrolled in Post-doctoral research with the Bernardes Group at Instituto de Medicina Molecular, where he developed serine hydrolase targeting PROTACs and innovative proteomics platforms that took advantage of the extensive repertoire of the group in covalent chemical binders. In 2021 Luis received a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship to join the Bernardes Lab in the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry in the University of Cambridge. Luis is currently a Senior Laboratory Research Scientist at The Francis Crick Institute, working in the application of proteomics technologies in the discovery and study of molecular glues.
