Rafael Trevisan obtained his PhD in Biochemistry (2014), MSc in Biochemistry (2010), and his BSc and BEd in Biological Sciences (2008) from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Florianópolis, Brazil). He was also a Visiting Master’s student at the University of Plymouth (Plymouth, UK, 2009) and a Visiting PhD student at the University College Cork (Cork, Ireland, 2013). After obtaining his PhD, Rafael was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Federal University of Santa Catarina from 2014 to 2016, and a Postdoctoral Associate from 2016 to 2019 at Duke University (Durham, USA), where he currently works as a Research Scientist. Rafael's interest in ecotoxicology started as an early undergraduate researcher taking part in biomonitoring field studies in Brazil, which led him to pursue a MSc and a PhD in Biochemistry to understand the responses of animals to environmental pollutants. This interest was further enriched with research visits to international ecotoxicology research groups at the University of Plymouth (UK) and the University College Cork (Ireland). During this phase of his career, he investigated the responses of biochemical and physiological systems of marine bivalves to environmental pollutants such as metals, nanomaterials, and model oxidant compounds; how these mechanisms can predict organismal health; and took part in many field studies to assess overall ecosystem health through the use of such stress responses. Following his interest in ecotoxicology, Rafael was awarded a competitive Postdoctoral Fellowship in Brazil to investigate molecular mechanisms associated with urban sewage and pathogen exposure in bivalves at Federal University of Santa Catarina, an important topic to the aquaculture industry in the largest oyster farming area of Brazil. He then moved to the USA as a Postodoctoral Associate at Duke University, where he now works as a Research Scientist investigating the metabolic costs of environmental pollutants and other stressors in fish species. His belief that the health of many ecosystems is under anthropogenic pressure and that science can help to change this scenario are the main drivers of his research interests. Throughout his scientific career, he combined laboratory and field studies to investigate stress responses at the molecular, biochemical, and physiological levels in bivalves and fish. He has identified physiological roles of the antioxidant system and the mercapturic acid pathway and how gills can act as a major metabolic organ during chemical exposures in bivalves. More recently, he is studying the impacts of nanoplastics on fish early development and their potential threat to multiple generations, animal behavior, and mitochondrial metabolism. He is also interested in the impact of environmental pollutants in the cardiovascular physiology of embryonic and larval fish and have been characterizing the energetic costs of pollutant adaptation in wild fish populations. After carrying on research projects at different research institutions and having significant international experience, he is determined to focus his research on addressing the impacts of environmental challenges in a changing world on aquatic organisms. Through his career, Rafael published 33 articles (162 citations and h-index 14), one book chapter, and collaborated with over 130 researchers from numerous countries. He has experiencing in grant writing and reviewing, has participated in several international conferences in environmental sciences and toxicology, and has been an active reviewer in journals in his area of expertise. He also has experience in teaching biochemistry and ecotoxicology for undergraduate and graduate students in Portuguese and in English and has been mentoring or co-mentoring students from the high-school to the MSc level on research projects related to ecotoxicology.
