Flávio Figueira graduated in 2006 in Chemistry at the University of Lisbon. During his graduation, he joined the group of Doctor Francine Agbossou at the Unité de Catalyse et Chimie Du Solide (Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Lille) to work in New Phosphine Oxazoline Ligands (PHOX) To Apply In Asymmetric Catalysis Of Imines. After graduation, he started to pursue his Master's degree in Inorganic and Bioinorganic Chemistry at the same institution (University of Lisbon) and Joined the group of Doctor João Galamba at Instituto Tecnologico Nuclear as a master student. During this time, he developed a thesis entitled Novos Complexos Organometálicos de Re(I) 99mTc(I) Contendo Derivados da L-Arginina, where it was possible to publish 3 peer-reviewed papers, before concluding the master degree. He continued his studies changing to Aveiro University where under the supervision of Professors João Tomé and Jonathan Sessler synthesised several expanded macrocycles for anion recognition. During this period, it was possible to work under the supervision of Professor Jonathan Sessler, a renowned specialist in expanded porphyrin and supramolecular chemistry at the University of Texas Austin. The work developed during the PhD provided five international peer-reviewed journals. After 2014, under the guidance of Doctor Filipe A. A. Paz working on the project ¿Preparation of novel phosphonate ligands for the construction of functional MOFs.¿ he development novel phosphonate ligands based on Sonogashira and Miyaura reactions. The new ligands prepared showed adequate features for the preparation of new Metal-Organic Frameworks bringing essential properties for a potential application in gas adsorption. In 2016, working again under the supervision of Professor João Tomé it was possible to further develop new porphyrinic and phthalocyanine cores for a wide variety of applications such as PDT, nitroaromatic detection and catalysis. In 2017, he has accepted to work in the project ¿Smart green homes ¿ BOSCH¿ where different materials have been developed mainly by post-synthetic modifications to enhance their adsorption capabilities against certain air contaminants (anthropogenic hazardous pollutants) including NOx, SOx, CO, H2S, NH3, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs) released from both static and mobile sources (e.g., industrial, transport, household, fossil fuel use, and many others). This work was developed by BOSCH in partnership with the University of Aveiro intending the development of novel technologies to improve the general individual´s wellbeing and facilitate the knowledge transfer between the academia and industry environments. Currently, Flávio Figueira is a Junior researcher in CICECO-University of Aveiro, where he develops metal-organic materials for detection systems namely, air contaminants, warfare agents and disease-associated biomolecules.
