Alexandra I. Costa received a Lic. in Industrial Chemical Engineering at Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, a M.Sc. in Organic Technological Chemistry at Faculty of Science and Technology of New University of Lisbon and a Ph.D. in Chemistry at Instituto Superior Técnico of Technical University of Lisbon, in 2010. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Departmental Area of Chemical Engineering at ISEL where she teaches curricular units of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry Section and participates as a trainer in the Training Course for Chemical Analysts from the Project 9ºW - Hovione. She is currently Vice-President of ADEQ/ISEL, President of Center of Chemical Engineering Studies at ISEL and integrated member of the Chemistry Center at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro. Her main interests and research activities are focused on Supramolecular Chemistry, particularly the synthesis of chemical fluorescent sensors containing calixarenes and more recently is also dedicated on the use of renewable natural resources for the sustainable synthesis of carbon nanomaterials (carbon-dots), their characterization and application as sensors for biological materials, as catalysts and as bioimaging tools. She is co-author of 23 scientific articles, published in international journals with referee, 3 patents and 71 painel communications presented in different international and nacional scientific meetings. She is currently responsible for the project DotCoffee funded by IDI&CA/IPL/2020, which aims the valorization of coffee grounds as carbon source to produce luminescent carbon nanodots (CNDs) by sustainable synthesis processes.
