João Soares holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Porto, with research focused on the development and performance assessment of hybrid solar/biomass electricity generation systems, integrating numerical modelling and experimental validation to optimize thermal energy conversion processes. His expertise extends to renewable energy systems and energy efficiency in industrial applications. With a strong foundation in CFD and advanced thermodynamic analysis, his research aims to enhance the performance of thermal energy storage, polygeneration, and sustainable heating and cooling technologies. His work bridges fundamental heat transfer studies with applied engineering, contributing to the advancement of next-generation energy solutions. Soares has an extensive research career, actively contributing to over 10 major research projects, with total funding exceeding €140 million and developing innovative solutions for industrial symbiosis, high-temperature heat pumps, hybrid CSP-biomass systems, and solar-driven desalination. His research output includes over 30 scientific publications, 11 peer-reviewed journal articles, 21 conference proceedings. He contributed for the development of 15 novel prototypes and pilot plants, ranging from advanced ejector-based refrigeration systems to solar-biomass hybrid power plants and polygeneration systems for zero-energy buildings. Beyond his research contributions, Dr. Soares is actively engaged in academia and scientific collaboration. He has been a university lecturer since 2015, teaching heat transfer, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and hybrid energy systems at undergraduate and doctoral levels at the University of Porto. He has contributed to curriculum development, laboratory protocols, and computational tools for engineering students, as well as supervising multiple master’s theses on advanced thermal systems, energy efficiency, and renewable energy integration. He has been acting as an expert evaluator for European Commission funding programs, including Horizon Europe and Horizon 2020, assessing research proposals on bioenergy, CHP systems, and industrial energy efficiency. He has also collaborated with industry partners on technology transfer, renewable energy integration, and thermal system design, providing consultancy in solar thermal applications, biomass gasification, and energy storage solutions.
