Isabel Belo é Professora Auxiliar no Departamento de Engenharia Biológica da Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho e Investigadora Principal no Centro de Engenharia Biológica (CEB) da mesma Universidade. É líder do subgrupo "Desenvolvimento e otimização de bioprocessos" do grupo Biosystems e é Diretora do Laboratório Temático de Biossistemas e Bioprocessos do CEB. É atualmente diretora da Licenciatura em Engenharia Química e Biológica, diretora-adjunta do Departamento de Engenharia Biológica e foi Diretora do Programa Doutoral em Engenharia Química e Biológica (2015-2020). Isabel Belo publicou 135 artigos em revistas científicas com revisão por pares e 7 capítulos de livros (Scopus h-index 38), é co-autora de 2 patentes e apresentou cerca de 45 comunicações orais, incluindo sessões plenárias e keynotes. Participou na organização e comissões científicas de conferências internacionais. Isabel Belo orientou 15 teses de doutoramento concluídas e orienta 4 em curso. Orientou mais de 50 dissertações de mestrado. Participa e/ou participou como Investigador Principal em 12 projetos e como membro de equipa em 25 projetos. Isabel Belo lidera uma equipa que desenvolve investigação em Engenharia de Bioprocessos e Tecnologia de Fermentações, com o objetivo principal de desenvolver e otimizar aplicações biotecnológicas de microrganismos (particularmente leveduras e fungos filamentosos), para a produção de compostos de interesse industrial a partir de matérias-primas de baixo custo e renováveis. A investigação recente tem-se centrado na dinamização da economia circular e contribuição para a sustentabilidade de processos de base biotecnológica com impacto em diversos setores, como agroalimentar, bioenergias, e as indúsrias química e têxtil.
