Ivone Marisa Pereira Martins

Ivone Martins graduated in Biotechnological Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, and earned her PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Genetics from the University of Salamanca (Spain) in 2009. She is currently a junior researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) at the University of Minho, where she leads innovative research in Phage Engineering and Phage Biotechnology. Her work focuses on developing phage-based tools for early detection and targeted therapy for medical applications. Since 2011, she has been exploring and implementing novel approaches in Phage Display and Phage Engineering to address osteoarticular and neurodegenerative diseases. Her significant contributions to the early detection and treatment of Alzheimer's disease have led to an international patent and has recently received the V International Zendal Award in the Human Health category for her project HERCULES, which targets Alzheimer's disease. Ivone has acquired expertise in various interdisciplinary fields, including Medical Engineering, Biology, Biomaterials, Pharmacology, and Neuroscience, and has completed several postgraduate courses. She has actively participated in numerous innovation, capacity-building, and acceleration initiatives for knowledge valorization and technology transfer, where her work has been recognized and awarded. Ivone has also worked as a visiting researcher at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. She has presented her research at various national and international conferences and scientific events, contributing both as a speaker and as a member of organizing and scientific committees. She is actively involved in science communication and dissemination initiatives aimed at both scientific and non-scientific audiences. Ivone has published over 20 articles in high-impact journals, accumulating nearly 500 citations and an h-index of 11. Additionally, she has actively supervised and mentored students, including PhD, MSc, and BSc candidates, at both the University of Minho and the University of Amsterdam. She has also contributed to teaching as an Invited Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering at the University of Minho, where she has been involved in delivering courses at both the undergraduate and master’s levels.
