Marta Laranjeira is an Associate Researcher at i3S (Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde) and currently leads a UT Austin Portugal Program 2021-funded project with a budget of 100k Euros. She completed her master's degree in 2007 and PhD in 2012, both in Biomedical Engineering, from the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP), University of Porto (Portugal). While conducting postdoctoral research work, she spent six months (April to July 2014 - August to November 2014) at the Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan (Kyutech). From 2015 to 2020, she was Invited to be Assistant Professor at FEUP. Marta established several international collaborations with the University of Oxford (UK), UT Austin (US), Medical University of Gdansk (Poland), UNICAMP (São Paulo, Brasil), and some Universities in Japan (Kyutech, Kyushu; NIMS, Tokyo; and Okayama University). In Portugal, she has national collaborations with the Institute and Hospital of Oncology from Porto (IPO) and with different faculties of the University of Porto, such as FFUP, FCUP, FEUP, FMDUP and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL, Braga, Portugal). She has published 15 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, including high-impact journals in the field, such as the Journal of Controlled Release and Materials & Design, with over 260 citations. Marta has participated in a total of 6 projects funded by FCT (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology), ANI (Portuguese National Agency for Innovation), COST Action, and the FCT-UT Austin Program. Her current project aims to develop a device with high patentability potential. Once the clinical proof-of-concept is funded and in parallel with the pilot study, a provisional patent application for this invention will be submitted. Her scientific work has been disseminated through more than 15 poster presentations and 9 oral presentations at international and national conferences. As a supervisor, she has mentored 16 students, including PhD and MSc candidates, and facilitated 6 international student exchanges. Her line of research and expertise lies within the preparation of magnetic nanoparticles for bone regeneration and cancer treatment (drug delivery; hyperthermia; imaging contrast agents, and cancer therapy strategies to collect and eliminate circulating tumour cells alone or/and in clusters).
