Elsa M. Cardoso graduated in Applied Chemistry - Biotechnology at the New University of Lisbon in 1995 and obtained her Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto in 2000. During her Ph.D. studies she visited the lab of Dr. Hultcrantz at Karolinska Institute (1996-1998) and has showed a protective role of liver CD8+ T lymphocytes in the pathogenesis of iron overload in Hereditary Hemochromatosis. After a Post-Doc in the lab of Maria de Sousa at the IBMC in Porto, she became an assistant professor at the ISCS-N in Gandra, and has taught Immunology and Genetics (2001-2015). Between 2008 and 2013, she was the head of the Research Group of Molecular and Cell Biology at CICS/ISCS-N. Between 2012 and 2023, she was an invited adjunct/assistant professor at Polytechnic of Guarda (IPG) and University of Beira Interior (UBI), and since 2023, adjunct professor at IPG. She is interested in investigating the role of CD8+ T lymphocytes, MHC-I molecules, and biomarkers in chronic diseases, particularly neurodegenerative diseases associated with aging.
