Fátima Camões graduated in Biology in 1993, FCTUC, and obtained a Master degree in Cellular Biology in 1997, FCTUC, with a study on the aluminium effect on the cholinergic system. She moved to the University of Aveiro (UA) where, in 2007, she obtained her PhD degree on the subject of the aluminium neurotoxicity and neuronal phosphorylation systems showing the neurotoxic aluminium effect on protein phosphatases. During her PhD she did an internship at NIOSH/CDC, West Virginia, USA, to perform the detection and characterization of altered protein expression induced by aluminium. She was awarded an honourable mention prize for best oral presentation, by presenting this work in the III Post-graduate Symposium in Biosciences at UA in 2004. Besides her PhD project, she also participated in other projects such as on the characterization of APP interacting proteins in human brain, detected via the yeast two hybrid system; on early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementia; and on the study of the cytotoxicity of new fluorescing compounds to be used on photodiagnostic of neoplasia. In 2008, Fátima joined the Organelle Biogenesis in Health and Disease Laboratory, at the Centre for Cell Biology, UA, as a post-doctoral researcher to work on peroxisome biogenesis and to contribute to the identification and characterization of the molecular machinery required for the growth and division of peroxisomes. In 2010, she was awarded an individual post-doctoral fellowship (by FCT) to work on the peroxisome-mitochondria connection and on the identification and molecular characterization of proteins involved in organelle dynamics and function. During this period, she did an internship at the School of Biosciences, University of Exeter, UK, to learn how to genetically manipulate and to exploit the filamentous fungus Ustilago maydis to study the peroxisome-mitochondria connection. In 2012, she was invited to participate in a project to study tail-anchored proteins in unexpected places and to unveil the targeting pathway to peroxisomes. During this time, she also collaborated in a study of the interplay between viruses and peroxisomes. In 2015, Fátima was invited for the position of Invited Assistant Professor at the Department of Biology, UA. Since 2016, she joined the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED) at UA, as a post-doctoral researcher and the manager of the cell culture facility of biosafety level 2 and the animal house. Between 2017 and 2019, Fátima was a member of the Council of the Department of Medical Sciences (DCM), representing the post-doctoral researchers. Since 2017, she is also a member of the Biosafety Commission, the Ethical Commission and the Animal Welfare Body of the DCM, UA. At the Animal Welfare Body she contributes actively for the evaluation of the research projects using animals. As she holds a FELASA category C and the Portuguese DGAV accreditations, she is authorized to design projects and to perform procedures on animals for scientific purposes, thus, from 2017 to 2020, she collaborated on the project pAGE - Protein aggregation across the lifespan on the WP3 - Characterization of proteome aggregation through aging in animal models. In 2019 and 2020 she organized and was a Trainer on the Microsurgery Courses for surgeons to practice vascular anastomosis using living animal models, and is now organizing the 2021 edition. In March 2020 she was designated by the iBiMED´s director to coordinate, along with other 2 researchers, the Task Force dedicated to the screening of SARS-CoV-2 in human samples at UA, which involved infrastructure adaptation, protocol design and optimization and team management. She coordinated this Task Force until August 2020. Since April 2020, she is also collaborating on the project Very high throughput low cost test for the massification of SARS-CoV-2 screening.
