Vincent Kümmerer is a geologist with a specialisation in marine geology. He completed a Master of Science in Marine and Coastal Systems at the University of Algarve and a Bachelor of Science in Geosciences at the University of Hamburg. The undergraduate studies in Geoscience provided him a broad knowledge in the geoscientific fields such as geology, sedimentology, petrography, mineralogy, pedology, earth history, geochemistry and geophysics. Here, he got into the first contact to marine and coastal depositional systems and he started to focus on marine geology. During his bachelor thesis he gained skills in palaeoceanography, marine sedimentology and responses of abyssal ecosystem after the anoxic extreme event of Sapropel S6 in the eastern Mediterranean. During this work he also developed statistical skills. At the same time, he worked in the framework of the Hamburg Cluster of Excellence ¿Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction (CliSAP)¿ in the sedimentological and micropaleontological laboratory and acquired skills in grain size analysis (traditional sieving), benthic foraminifera taxonomy and the required sample preparation, as well as team skills in an international scientific working group. In his postgraduate studies in Marine and Coastal Systems he focused in extending his knowledge in marine sciences such as marine geology, oceanography and oceanographic data analysis. Here, he acquired further statistical skills related to environmental studies, marine numerical modelling (NSWING, Mirone, MOHID, GMT) and coastal vulnerability assessment to storm and tsunamis (storm retreat, overwash, coastal erosion, mass movement). In his master thesis he collaborated as a research trainee in the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera Divisão de Geologia e Georecursos Marinhos, Portugal, and the Universidade do Algarve Centro de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental (CIMA), Portugal. In this time he developed skills in marine sedimentology, by studying high energy events related to tsunamis, such as grain size analysis (laser diffraction, end-member modelling), microtextural analysis on quartz grain surfaces (automated image analysis, scanning electron microscope, exoscopy), numerical modelling (NSWING (shallow-water wave propagation model), bayesian age-depth modelling), inorganic geochemistry (X-ray fluorescence, 14C ¿ and 210Pb isotopes), multivariate statistical analysis in environmental studies (PCA, Cluster analysis, RDA, LDA) and gained substantial programming skills in R, MatLab, GMT and bash scripting. Right now, he is contributing in research outputs related to offshore tsunami sedimentation such as conference abstracts, presentation and a journal article. At present he is undertaking a Ph.D. program at the University of Algarve with the title "Storm processes and impacts in geologically controlled barrier islands".

Institution / Organization
2019/06/06 - 2019/06/06 In the frame of the internship at IPMA a field trip to south Portuguese coastal areas (Marthinhal, Boca do Rio) was organized in order to see the onshore deposits of the 1755 ce Lisbon tsunami, led by Dr. Pedro Costa (University of Coimbra) and Dr. Teresa Drago (IPMA, IDL). The field trip included coring and excavation of geological stratifications related to the event deposits. Aspects of tsunami inundation, its sedimentological deposition dynamics and geological impacts were discussed.
