Quintino Lopes is PI of the FCT-funded R&D team project "Phonetics Laboratory": Coimbra - Harvard. Rethinking 20th-century scientific centres and peripheries" (2022.06811.PTDC), leading a team of 12 researchers attached to the Universities of Évora, Coimbra and Stockholm. The value of this research, which brings developments in experimental phonetics into the mainstream of the history of science, is demonstrated by the recognition it has received from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, with a one-day symposium on the subject: "Armando de Lacerda: A pioneer of Experimental Phonetics - Kungl. Vetenskapsakademien (kva.se)". Lopes' leading role in the field is also underlined by the co-editing of a book by the Technische Universität Dresden Press (2022) and the publication of another book by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (2023). This research has been adapted as curriculum content for secondary schools across Europe: "https://euroclio.eu/projects/sharing-european-histories" - a project translated into 12 languages. Lopes is the scientific coordinator of the "History of Science, Technology and the Environment" research group at the Institute of Contemporary History (NOVA University of Lisbon; University of Évora), leading a team of 40 (including full, associate and assistant professors, postgraduate researchers and graduate students). He completed his Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Évora in 2017: the thesis was funded by the FCT (first in a competitive call). In 2018, he won the "Young Researchers Award" of the Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History and published a book with a preface by the president of the European Society for the History of Science, Ana Simões, who described it as "a unique study of the scientific policy of the National Education Board that will have a lasting impact on future studies in the field". Since 2017, Lopes has focused on the history of experimental phonetics, contributing to the recovery of the history of laboratories through publications, lectures, the organisation of scientific meetings, the signing of protocols, the creation of phonetics exhibitions and the creation of an international phonetics archive, which includes the collection of oral testimonies and items from the personal archives of linguists from the US, Germany, Australia and Portugal. He has been interviewed about his research for articles published in major Portuguese newspapers, radio stations and primetime television broadcasts. His scholarly production includes peer-reviewed books, articles and book chapters for publishers such as Springer, the Royal Society, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Technische Universität Dresden Press, Brown University and Universidad Carlos III, Madrid. His research has been recognised and funded by the History of Science Society (USA), the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (France), Johns Hopkins University (USA), the University of Strasbourg (France), Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain), the University of Macau (China) and the private company Ferraz de Lacerda (Portugal). He has been a keynote speaker at the National Library of Portugal and a guest speaker at universities in the USA, Europe and China. He is currently supervising two doctoral theses and is involved in projects funded by the European Commission, the FCT, the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades and the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad. His versatility is also demonstrated by his consultancy work for the production of a film based on a historical novel by the Nobel Prize winner in Literature, José Saramago, which won the prize for best film at the Efebo D'Oro International Festival in Palermo in 2021. This year he was also awarded a junior researcher contract within the FCT's CEEC (second out of 144 candidates).
