Paula Cardoso holds a PhD in Art History from the Nova University of Lisbon (2019). Her thesis focused on the production, patronage and use of illuminated liturgical books by the Portuguese Dominican nuns in the context of Observant Reform, bringing to light new information on these nuns' agency, their level of literacy and the connections between monastic art and communal memory. Part of this research was conducted at the Medici Archive Project, Florence (Italy) where she held a non-stipendiary junior research fellowship in 2017. In 2021 she was awarded a Marie Sklodowska Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship by the European Commission to develop a two-year project at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona). She has published peer-reviewed articles in international publications such as the Journal of Medieval History, the Journal of Medieval Iberian Studies, Mélanges de la Casa de Velázquez and Brepols journal Pecia. Le livre et l'écrit. Currently Paula is working at the Instituto de Estudos Medievais of the Nova University of Lisbon where she was granted a research contract under the competitive program Scientific Employment Stimulus of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Her current research explores the interrelations between the visual and textual cultures, identities and liturgy of Portuguese mendicant nuns from the Late Medieval to the Early Modern period.
