Nuno Santarém scientific upbringing had as first steps a degree in Biochemistry by the University of Porto (UP) followed by a Master in Molecular Microbiology by the University of Aveiro involving iron uptake by Leishmania amastigotes. An international PhD was the next obvious step and it was done as a co-tutelage between the Faculty of Pharmacy of the UP and the University of Laval in Quebec, Canada. During his PhD he was in the frontline of the nascent area of Extracellular Vesicles (EVs) research in Leishmania. Upon the completion of his doctoral studies Nuno Santarém was mostly involved in the execution of an FCT project as Junior Researcher followed by participation in two FP7 projects related to drug development. After 22 years researching in distinct aspects of Leishmania biology in 3 different research groups. These included several studies involving the study of distinct aspects of the immune response associated to the Leishmania infection. Nuno Santarém acquired a broad scientific perspective having now a h-index of 23 (Scopus) with 66 publications with 5,79 of median impact factor (IF) and more than 4000 citations. In the last 5 years he co-authored 28 publications (that included 3 first authorships, 3 second authorship and 3 corresponding authorship. Although Nuno Santarém median publication IF is top 5% for parasitology, he also published in higher impact journals like Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, Frontiers Immunology or Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. Most publications are included in the area of Medical and Health Sciences with emphasis on Parasitology and Immunology. In 2018, he obtained his first independent research grant funded by FCT (240 000). Additionally, in the last 5 years he was also involved as a team member in 3 other grants. During the last five years, he co-supervised 3 PhD student (1 ongoing), 1 research fellow, 2 master students and 6 undergraduate students. He also gave 13 invited seminars that included summer schools, international and national meetings and, UP doctoral and master programs. Nuno Santarém was also: co-author of 5 book chapters (one as first author), a member of PhD jurys, and main jury of 5 MsC, involved in the organization of two summer schools in which he was also a lecturer. He has also been a regular invicted lecturer in the Doctoral Program in Molecular and Cell Biology and the Mestrado de Bioquímica em Saúde ¿ Escola Superior de Saúde, Porto. As an experienced researcher in the use of the animal facilities (having FELASA C level) Nuno Santarém was also the official tutor of students for access to the i3S animal facilities. In 2016, Nuno Santarém was invited and became part of the I3S Animal Welfare and Ethics Body. Nuno Santarém is also well recognized by the scientific community at large being a regular peer reviewer for scientific journals like Scientific Reports, Parasitology, Parasites & vectors, Microorganisms, Natural Reports, Parasitology Research, Pharmaceuticals, Molecules European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Acta Tropica. He is also guest editor for two Leishmania themed special edition in the Journal Microorganisms.
