Bárbara Castanheira

Bárbara Isabel Sousa Castanheira received in 2020 a Bachelor degree in Medicinal Chemistry from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Coimbra and in 2022 a Master degree in Biochemistry from the same institution. Her dissertation, under the supervision of Doctor Ana Cristina Rego, aimed to analyse the influence of the activation of glutamate receptors, namely, Syn and ESyn NMDARs on CREB activation associated with changes in intracellular Ca2+ levels, mitochondrial Ca2+ retention and mitochondrial transmembrane potential, and their correlation with mRNA levels of two CREB-regulated genes, BDNF and GADD45, in AD primary cortical neurons derived from APP/PS1 transgenic mice (producing intracellular Aß) or Wistar rat cortical neurons exposed to Aß1-42 (AßO) oligomers. Furthermore, it aimed to analysed the influence of histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis), tacedinaline and sodium butyrate, under these experimental conditions. Since 2022, she has been a research fellow at BioMark research group from the Chemical Engineering Department in University of Coimbra, where she has been doing research under the OligoFIT project, where she pretends to develop a specific and sensitive immunosensor to alpha-synuclein protein.
