Marine biologist with a PhD in Oceanography obtained in 2012. Benthic ecologist with expertise on taxonomy, human impacts on deep-sea ecosystems and marine pocily. Postdoctoral experience in deep sea benthic ecology, as well as taxonomy, biodiversity, ecology, biogeography and natural history of Tanaidacea, Isopoda and Amphipoda, as well as deep-sea mining impacts on benthic ecosystems and species. Author of 36 peerreviewed research papers, three book chapters and 54 communications in scientific meetings, most of them resulting from international collaborations. I am first author of three book chapters. Attracted funds research from external sources (total: >120k euros). Significant contributions to the knowledge of the biodiversity of various geographical areas include describing a total of 24 taxa new to science from the NE Atlantic, South and central Pacific and Southern Oceans. Development of taxonomic tools such as identification keys and charts for various groups of Crustacea, and complete lists georeferenced records of crustacean species of the SE Pacific and Iberian Peninsula that are published and accessible to the public and scientific community. Assessments of the impacts of mining operations on the benthic abyssal communities, focusing on manganese nodules ecosystems. Participated as research collaborator on a total of five international projects and consortiums. Since 2019, participate in the project MiningImpact II, funded internationally by JPI-Oceans, aiming to study the ecological impacts of deep-sea mining. In the framework of this project participated in three research cruise in the Pacific Ocean, leading the macrofauna team and operations. Other recent project participation include the project EMSO funded by FEDER. Collaborations through various funding sources with colleagues at the Australian Museum, University of Magallanes (Chile), Lodz University (Poland), Univerité of Caen Normandie (France), IFREMER (France). TEaching: Since 2022, theory-practice on Biogeography and Biology and Ecology of Deep Ecosystems at the University of Aveiro (Portugal). Further teaching experience include participation as invited intervener in the National Action Training: 8th Taxonomic Workshop (2017) organized by CNRS Resomar at CRESCO-Dinard, France. Broad experience in supervising and mentoring students, including undergraduates and postgraduates, particularly students with indigenous backgrounds (totalling 12 students research projects). Awarded Research mentor (2021) by the Organization for Tropical Studies for the NSF-funded summer courses NAPIRE and NSF_LSAMP REU aiming to increase cultural diversity in scientific research. Services to the society are focused on contributions to scientifically informed decision making in marine policy: As a co-lead of the Minerals Working Group of the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative (DOSI), I have been involved in various activities related with the international negotiations on the regulations of the exploitation of mineral resources in the deep sea, including participation as observer of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in the Council meetings (2020-23). Participation in workshops hosted by the ISA, and co-chairing of the South East Pacific Regional Scientific Research Committee of the Challenger 150 action (DOSI Decade Working Group). Member of GBIF working group for catalogue of Natural History Collection. Outreach activities include the publication of a science dissemination article, participation as panellist in webinars for the general public, talks for public societies and high level events (e. g., SEARica, European Parliament).
