Pr Philippe Martinez is a paleoceanographer and paleoclimatologist, expert on paleoproductivity, climatic and biogeochemical variations in the low latitudes, the transfer and accumulation of terrestrial organic carbon into the ocean. He is currently Professor at the University of Bordeaux attached to the research laboratory EPOC (Environnements et Paléoenvironnements Océaniques et Continentaux). He completed a Doctorate in Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology in 1997 and a “Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches” (HDR) in 2009 at the University of Bordeaux. After a post-doctorate at the University of Québec (Canada), he obtained a position of Lecturer (Maître de Conférences) at the University of Bordeaux in 1999 and gained a professorship in 2013. He won 4 awards: 1 PES (“Prime d’Excellence Scientifique” for the period 2011-2015) and 3 PEDR (Prime d’encadrement doctoral et de recherche, for the periods 2007-2011, 2015-2019 and 2020-2024). He provided research training to more than 20 Master's and PhD students. His publication record contains 83 papers in international journals, with a Scopus h-index of 29, relying on a large national and international collaborative network. He coordinated 2 lab instrumentation projects and 5 scientific projects and co-organized 5 congresses and workshops. He was part of 3 selection boards for academic positions and 11 jury of Habilitation (HDR) and PhD evaluations. He participated in 3 national and 6 international oceanic cruises including 2 IODP expeditions (202 in the SE Pacific, and 353), the last one being the IODP Expedition 353 “Indian Monsoon Rainfall” in 2014-2015. His expertise relies on EA-IRMS analysis of Nitrogen and Carbon isotopes, ICP-MS of trace elements, XRF core scanning for major and minor element measurements, rock-eval pyrolysis, and elemental analysis of organic and biogenic compounds (opal, organic carbon, calcium carbonates). He conducted research on the evolution of the Plio-Quaternary western African upwelling systems, on the centennial to millennial-scale variability of the low-latitude climate in the eastern Pacific with a special interest in the oxygen minimum zone and Peruvian upwelling changes since the last deglaciation and relationships with ENSO and ITCZ variability, and on the interplay between the oceanic sink of terrestrial organic matter and Quaternary climatic changes in the tropics. Lately, his research interests expanded to the Asian low-latitude climate systems for studying the Indian monsoon variability during the last 1.4 million years, based in particular on the IODP material he contributed to collect in the Bay of Bengal.
